Author Topic: Micro Hifi to play backing tracks next to my amp. (Read 11089 times)

Hi all,

I had a blast during xmas back home. I had a cheap marshall MG15CDR and played with my pedals through the clean channel (which didnt sound as bad as i thought). Anyhow this is the irrelevant part.

The relevant part is that i had a Yamaha 100W RMS (0.018% THD 8Ohm) hi end amp with 2 B&W DM603 speakers.. blasting backing tracks. Needless to say , it was the first time playing along with backing tracks in my life and i was so stoked!!!!!

So anyhow, back in the UK where my amp is on a different floor to my pc etc etc, i want to buy a decent micro hifi system that can hold its own against my Laney 30w valve amp (at 3/10 vol with hotplate)

The ones i am looking at

Panasonic SCPM31 (2x80W RMS) 5CD mp3 player 2way speakers

Panasonic SCPM41 (2x80W RMS) as above but with slightly bigger and better 3 Way speakers (2 woofers and 1 tweeter, whereas the cheaper model doesnt have the tweeter).

The SCPM31 is 129GBP

Any of the 3 would be fine imo, id probably go for that one ^

mp3 playback is a huge bonus as it means you can load up cds with ALOT of music, and play it back without swapping cds etc :)

It wont sound as good as the Yamaha though :P

I have a JVC UPX system thing. Keeps up with my amp well enough so long as the amp is quiet. I think its 2x60w

I own a JVC micro system i`ve had it & used everyday since i bought it 6 years ago !!! and it still works perfectly

Cool guys thanks a lot!

At this point i am between the 2 panasonics... the 31 and the 41, the only difference is the speakers (2way vs 3way) and that the 41 has an extra bass boost thingy... i dont know if those 2 features are worth the 30quid difference. What do you reckon?

BTW the Panasonic is 2x80 +tape deck, whereas the JVC is 2x60 without the tape deck.

Personally I'd say go for separates again, unless you go for one of the Micro Denon hifis which are really nice.

definitely go with seperates if you can afford it. Might be worth checking out Richer Sounds or some other kind of place in the sales. Seperates do sound a lot better, to my ears, than an all in one unit.

If you've got B&W speakers then no Micro system will sound as good as them. I bought cheap separates for my PC and I don't regret it (from Richer Sounds).

What do you mean seperates?

I just want a micro hifi system to cover my needs here in the UK as a tenant for backing tracks alongside my Laney. I got no delusions of replicating the 1300quid Yamaha amp/speakers that i got back home.

Do you mean by separates the 2way speakers vs 3way speakers?

By separates we mean the amplifier is in a different case to the CD player etc. You don't have to spend as much money as you main Hifi but separates usually have better sound quality than Microsystems etc (excluding anything made by Linn, B&O etc).

BTW, i think i ve just found the ideal solution.

It seems that most companies produce now what they call Home cinema systems, which is basically a DVD player (plays Mp3, Divx, DVD, CD, SACD etc), RDS tuner, and 5.1 DD/DTS Amp, with 4x 65W speakers 1x100 center speaker and 1x100W Sub. All that (500W RMS) for 160quid or so...

It sounds like a no brainer to me...

The only trouble is that home cinema setups rarely sound that great playing music in stereo.

wouldnt though sound better than a cheap micro hifi like the ones i posted earlier on? This philips is SACD etc, so i would think it would be also biased (in a sense) towards audio as well.

its rarely the case that home-cinema setups sound as good for stereo playback but there are exceptions. have a listen and see what you think before you buy.
