By separates we mean the amplifier is in a different case to the CD player etc. You don't have to spend as much money as you main Hifi but separates usually have better sound quality than Microsystems etc (excluding anything made by Linn, B&O etc).

BTW, i think i ve just found the ideal solution.
It seems that most companies produce now what they call Home cinema systems, which is basically a DVD player (plays Mp3, Divx, DVD, CD, SACD etc), RDS tuner, and 5.1 DD/DTS Amp, with 4x 65W speakers 1x100 center speaker and 1x100W Sub. All that (500W RMS) for 160quid or so...
It sounds like a no brainer to me...
