Pickup suggestion for Carvin DC747 (Alder/Maple)
« on: June 15, 2011, 06:55:22 PM »
Hey, guys. I'm looking for new pickups for my Carvin DC747 (HSH) and I need help.

First of all, the Carvin is Alder body + maple neck (neckthrough), so, as I read, maple is what is going to influence more the tone, right? Have that in consideration

The amp I'll be getting is either a ENGL Powerball II or a Mesa Dual Rectifier (not sure on the cab, probably one with v30s), I'm looking for them used so, I'll just wait until something appears. Also, if you know someone in Europe selling, feel free to tell me

And finally, the "sound" I'm after: I mostly play Technical Death Metal and Jazz Fusion, so I'd like to have a Necrophagist-like-distortion but still have some jazzy-cleans, like Cynic.

So, based on this facts, which pickups do you think I should get?

PS: I know many of you will say I should try the Carvin pups first. I'm going to do that, I just want to know my options if I don't like them

PS-2: It's an HSH configuration, I'm not sure if I should buy 2 Humbuckers and leave the single on the guitar or buy 2 hums and 1 single. Anyway, just give your opinion, whether HSH or HH

PS-3: I know I'll have to route the guitar, so, no need to warn me

Thanks in advance!

Nolly

It might sound over the top, but a set of Alnico Warpigs would probably suit you very well in that guitar. They do the heavy stuff beautifully of course, but they also scrub up nicely to give lovely fat and organic clean and mid gain tones when needed. With a middle pickup you'll have the split positions 2 and 4 for the super "studio clean" sounds along the lines of some of the Cynic tones on Traced in Air.

I was once recommended the Miracle Man set. Why the Warpig instead of the MM? Also, wouldn't a ceramic warpig be better for the bridge position?

Also, which middle pickup do you think I should get? Or should I keep the one I have?

Thanks :)

The MM is not the first choiche for jazzy cleans. I think Nolly's suggestion makes  a lot of sense. The alnico's WP's will do nice, fat and warm! cleans and are brutal with highgain.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

Definitely NOT MM's. They're not what you're wanting.
