What pup to pick
« on: June 24, 2011, 05:47:34 PM »
I've been a member for quite a while but this is my first post.

I fancy something different for my bridge pup on a suhr modern mahogany neck and body. I have a BK crawler in at the mo. I like something with a bit more saturation and more body.

Any suggestions?

Cheers K

Maybe I am mistaken here but I thought the crawler was pretty fat? I donīt have one, but that is what I think I heard about that pub.

Have you tried toying around with the height a bit? That usually makes a lot of difference with BKPs.
BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n
On the sidelines: Stockholm b / Suppermassive n, Mule n, AM set, IT mid

Hi and welcome. This surprises me. My Crawler sits in a handmade swampash-superstrat and it's quite fat. Maybe the height, as Kiichi also mentions. If you want somehting a bit more modern sounding and with beef, look at the Holy Diver.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

It is indeed rather fat - perhaps not "pretty" fat but still the canonical answer to the "I want to fatten / warm up my bright guitar" threads.

@Dirty Dog: sorry for the obvious question, but are you sure the wiring is ok ? Given how it sounds on my going-thru maple neck / maple sides Vox,  the Crawler bridge should sound *really* fat on an all-mahogany guitar...

Now while rather hot, it's still on the vintage side when it comes to voicing. I don't know what style you're playing, but if you're into modern metal, you perhaps want something like a Warpig.

Have: Crawlers, BGF 50/52s, Mules, ABomb, RiffRaff
Had : Slowhands (n&m), Trilogy (b)

Thanks for the replies

Maybe i should say more balanced, its hard to say in words what sound i mean. The crawlers a great pup, but a fancy a pup with more saturation, but still with some definition.

by more saturation i assume you mean more dirt and compression?

i don't have any choices to contribute but maybe we can help you define your interrogations!
My BK's:
Black Dog8-Riff Raff8 / Black Dog7-Mule7
C-Bomb Set / Blackhawk Bridge
Holydiver Set/ BG50 Set

Yeah a bit more dirt and compression, but still maintain some definition.

i should note that BKP's are very clean pickups, even on the highest output! some even say a warpig doesn,t have enough ''gain'' because they're used to the way dimarzios and duncans kind of fizzy up their tone. with BKP sometimes you may have to crank the gain a bit higher to get the fuzz you want, but when you crank it up, it's still crystal clear and unforgiving!
My BK's:
Black Dog8-Riff Raff8 / Black Dog7-Mule7
C-Bomb Set / Blackhawk Bridge
Holydiver Set/ BG50 Set

I definitely recommend trying out the Holy Diver, it should be perfect for your needs.
I understand what you're saying about the Crawler, I'd describe it as "rich" rather than "fat" - it has plenty of top end presence and the voicing is rather open and clean - not the more focussed and saturated sound you seem to be after.

Thanks for your replies, after researching and the advice given here i think i'm going to give the Holy Diver a go. On paper it seems to tick most of the boxes.
