If done on a modern metalplank, I like swirl. Def. not on vintagestyle guitars.

I tried swirling some effects pedal cases too - got the borax, enamel paint, water at the right temp, followed the 'how to' online and it came out a mess.  I think there's a real trial and error process till you find what works for you.
