Schecter Omen Extreme needs new pups - suggestions?
« on: July 05, 2011, 12:19:30 PM »
Hi guys im looking to get some new pickups for my shecter omen extreme 6 (mahogany body). I have a ceramic nailbomb calibrated set in my PRS SE custom 24 as i wanted versatile pickups - this time round i just want to build a metal machine. The nailbomb is kinda scooped which is fine but this time i want more mid attack to counteract the mahogany.
Bands im into: Metallica, Opeth, Katatonia, Morbid Angel, nevermore, Inflames, etc. Tightness is paramount. I play through a Mesa Single Recto boosted with a Maxon OD808.
What do u suggest for the neck/bridge? cheers!

Painkiller if you want to tune low. A miracle man would be great too. It has lots of low mids and less high mids.

Hey man thanks for the response-i tune to E standard and drop D so nothing crazy. When i describe the ceramic nailbomb as scooped , what i mean i suppose is that it has low mids so i found i had to alter the EQ of my amp to compensate and help it cut through the mix better. So this time im looking for something more middy if that makes sense? cheers

The Painkiller is a pickup which sheds the waters between people. imho its brilliand for drop C and below. it lacks bottom  end and becomes a bit too snarly in lighter tunings.

Im a huge fan of alnico pickups. I havent tried it myself but the holy diver seems really promising.

I tried to Cold sweat too, and its hands down one of the best sounding pickups i've ever heard!!!!

hey man thanks for that-yeah i have heard opposing views on the painkiller ,and i am worried about it sounding too thin. However i would like something that has that mid boost it seemed to have on paper, and wondered if a mahogany guitar would tame its shrillness? and the cold sweat u recommend-would that be for bridge?

yeah. i've only tried the bridge model too. It has über single note clarity, and a cling to it like you're swinging a katana instead of your pick. Its extremely good for fast playing. Im totally in love and i must buy a new guitar soon, so i can own a cold sweat too ^^

wow i knew it was supposed to be good for neck position but didnt realise it could be so good on the bridge, is it quite weak output though? compared to some of the other models youve tried?

Not in my ears. its a contemporary pickup. Dc resistance does not fully tell a pickups hotness. actually the higher dc resistance, the darker the pickup will sound.
Its hot enough for extreme deathmetal :P
