The News of the World to close

News of the World to close amid hacking scandal This Sunday's issue of the News of the World will be the last edition of the paper, News International chairman James Murdoch has said.

In the past few days, claims have been made that the paper authorised hacking into the mobile phone of murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler, the families of 7/7 bombing victims and bereaved military families.

Sky News said proceeds from the paper's last edition would be given to good causes.

In a statement made to staff, Mr Murdoch said the good things the News of the World does "have been sullied by behaviour that was wrong - indeed, if recent allegations are true, it was inhuman and has no place in our company".

"The News of the World is in the business of holding others to account. But it failed when it came to itself."

How long till The Sun on Sunday starts with all the same staff? Not long.

One suspects there will now be zero fallout with the paper gone, and everyone gets off scot free. Hurrah for justice.

+1 to the above. I'm just wondering how long it will be until some of those involved ask the press to respect their privacy at this difficult time.
I think I hate being indecisive.

All the 250 "workers" who had nothing to do with the disgusting practices are now out of a job until they are possibly re-hired on less money / pension to work in the same building producing - "The Sun Day" paper....

James Murdoch and Rebekah Brooks enjoy total security while daddy Rupert gets his BSKYB purchase waived through without interruption.

Parliament + CEO = SH!TBAGS the lot of them..

It's all so utterly cynical isn't it?

And despite all the talk on the news about it tarnishing Murdoch's image, I don't doubt for a second that he'll complete the BSkyB takeover without a hitch.

On one level, I'm a little sad to see the end of the News of the World - OK, it was a scurrilous rag but that's 168 years of history ended just like that.

I may sound harsh here, but I have no sympathy for anyone that works for the News of the World.
I feel sorry for the newsagents.

Just a though, the advertisers that pulled out of NOTW to protect their brands from the scandal, can they really just go over to the Sun on Sunday when everybody knows it's just going to be notw reincarnate?
Most notw reaaders might be happy to buy the Sun on Sunday but without the advertisers on board it won't succeed. The situation is unprecidented, I'm not so sure the outcome will be so predictable.

I bet it will end up as a film one day...

Well only Ford had actually pulled anything, I believe? And that was only a suspension of advertising "pending TNOTW's own investigation". Everyone else was only considering removing adds. And nobody had so much as thought about taking adverts from any of their other titles.

A changed name and editor and they'll all be back on board fully.

The Sunday Sun will simply replace the NOTW .

Sadly Murdoch will remain teflon coated , the BSKYB deal will still go ahead and Skynet will be activated

NOTW is a sacrificial lamb to keep our eyes and attentions away from the deeper issues going on here:

Police corruption
Journo's out of control and above the law
Politicians and PM's effectively owned by media barons (and banks/financial institutions) - all PMs since Thatcher!
