Anyone know anything about bikes?
« on: July 09, 2011, 04:36:04 PM »
I've decided to buy myself a nice-ish bike for commuting to work (about 10 miles each way), and was going to drop about 400-500 quid on it. ANyone here know what I'd be best going with. The route is very hilly indeed (Uphill the whole way home!. Takes about twice as long on my old bike as going in) but over pretty good roads. I'd like to be able to take pretty long rides on my days off, too. Maybe about 40-50 miles on country roads.

I've done a bit of negotiating with the fella in a local bike shop, and could get the base model Cannondale Bad Boy or Cannondale Quick for about £450, but I was wondering if the massed minds here would know any better bike to go for. I don't mind spending the money stated, I'd rather get the best bike I can afford than get something near enough simply because it's cheaper. What price point is the onset of diminishing returns in bike-land anyway?

So, BKP'ers. It's a different kind of metal to the usual round here, but I'd welcome any thoughts.

About £1000 for a road bike, about £2000 dot MTb is where things start tailing off. If you can push your spending up a little take a look at planet-x for road bikes - superb value for money - I got an all-carbon road bike with SRAM red for a grand which is gob-smacking value...

A grand would pretty much kill my beer budget for a month, too, though. Six ton is the absolute limit. A shame, as those Planet X jobbies look beautiful.

If it is going to be used for cycling to work you should speak to your employer about taking part in the cycle to work scheme:

Sounds like a good deal to me and you might even be able to get a higher spec bike.
I think I hate being indecisive.

Have a look around for used Specialized Allez or others at a similar price point. I just sold my 2010 Allez for £350 so you can get bargains! I bought it new (on sale) for £400 as well.

The cycle to work schemes are best looked at as interest free loans unless you are a high rate tax payer - still excellent though....

Couple of points/thoughts:

If you go for a road bike - think carefully if you need drop handlebars - you may well find that 'flat bars' are more comfortable and useful for everyday use, unless you are a hardcore lunatic!

Something along the lines of a Specialized Sirrus or a Giant Rapid would be a good starting point

Might sound odd but... The Boardman range of bikes in Halfords are really good vfm - get very good ratings in the bike mags

If it is hilly - you will need plenty of gears! So, if you get a road bike make sure that you have a nice low gear - unless you have lungs like the Goodyear Blimp!

I have a Ridgeback hybrid, very nice for commuting. Hybrids are a good shout if you want panniers or a comfy ride. Got mine for about £350 and don't regret a thing.

fully agree. my friend brought a budget Giant for a similar price which was amazing too.

top tips:
* save a bit of money for good tyres with some puncture resistance (continental gatorskin for example) - roughly speaking the thinner the tyre, the faster you go. i run 23s and wouldn't go above a 25. 25 will give a bit of extra comfort if theres alot of potholes on your route and isn't that much slower than 23s in all honesty. i do notice the difference with 28s though.
* change the rim tape for cloth - massively reduces the chances of pinch flats
* budget for a good lock which is big enough to lock the frame and the front wheel together round a post or whatever
* change all the quick release stuff for locking versions
* get a helmet, even a 30 quid one

the boardman range of bikes are good, i agree there

i also think drop handlebars are a good idea, even round a flat city. if its windy, you can go in the drops and you really notice the energy saving. i don't think the racing position is uncomfy - you may disagree though, try it!

just my view - i commute everyday across london, and do a bit of leisure riding too, even a couple of races.

Been keeping an eye on this thread as I've been looking for a bike.  Took the lad out for the first time on the back of one the other week and it was wicked.

My mate might be selling a Giant hybrid.  It's up near Blackpool though.
Advice worth what you just paid for it.

I've sorted with mates to get a run on a Giant Hybrid of some sort and a Specialized Sirrus (I think). I look forward to comparing them. I know for certain I want a rigid frame bike, as anything I've tried with suspension seems merely to be added weight with no added benefit for road use.

On tyres et al, the one thing I was initially dubious about on the Cannondale BB was the fact it came with full slicks. I really didn't need to worry on that, if anything they gave more grip than knobblies and naturally were a good deal quicker. For everyday, 4 season riding, though, some kind of semi-threaded tyre might be more practical.

My boss seems really keen to do a cycle to work scheme, too, to the point where she's talking about getting us proper cycle parking hoops out the back, trying to get 50-70% cycling to work, all that sort of stuff. Of course, that'll just result in me spending even more money.

I ride on the road a lot, and when I was in London used to commute.  In the States I have a road bike with Campagnolo gears and all the light components, but when I was in London I used a hybrid with straight bars, but I really prefer drops for any distance.  I agree with GwEm on the quick releases, just use bolts (or take the leavers out - 5 minutes work).  I had a lock that would take the front and rear wheels and frame (long steel cable).  That way they'll find something else.  Also, go for the less flashy look, they'll pass you over.  If you go for straight bars don't let them talk you into twist gears.  You want levers.

A helmet is a must, and good gloves too.

Watch for people getting out of taxis into the bike lane when traffic backs up.  I've had it happen to me twice.  I saw the taxi driver trying to stop the one guy, but he wasn't listening (I was that close when he opened the door).  My gloves took the hit on one hand.

Further developments:

I spent most of the weekend trying out bikes from shops and buddies. I learned a few things.

Drop bars really don't suit me. I've an old back injury from years ago (a very slapstick accident, but a story for another time) and after a mile or two, I'm as stiff as Hefner in his 20's.

Racing Saddles are great once they're "warmed up" in a little (and your arse gets used to them), and ultimately more comforting than those gel-filled thrones sold for comfort.

29" wheels are definitely better for top speed and distance, but something of a bitch for acceleration when compared to 26" or 700C's

Riding a bike with a 15 year-old Shimano SIS drivetrain has pretty much deadened my senses to the subtle distinctions of newer running gear. Pretty much, everything is better, quieter and smoother, and it'd be some time before I would even notice the difference between entry level and competition grade.

As I suspected, unless you're actively seeking out bumps, suspension is just weight you don't need. Rear suspension in particular is a little silly for road riding, as I was born with knees.

In conclusion, though, in my price range, it's nip-and-tuck between bikes. I'm pretty well aware I'm not going to be able to get everything and a cherry on top, so I'm going to have to pick the one that gives me the strengths I want, and the flaws I can live with, or iron out with money later. I'm vacillating between the Cannondale Bad Boy, a Giant Rapid 4 and a Specialized Sirrus Elite. It's probably going to come down to price and gut at the end of the day. The Cannondale is marginally ahead, though, as the other two bikes are in a shop where manners and customer service apparently don't exist, and I'd be loath to give them the proverbial steam off my piss, let alone half a grand.

Nice summary - good luck with your search

Another top tip?

Get yourself some decent shorts (if you have not got any already) - will ease the pain on your bum.....
