Project Management
« on: July 13, 2011, 11:46:20 AM »
Bit of a boring subject so not expecting much in the way of response! I'm due to go on a Prince 2 course next week, has anyone on here been on one? Just interested in what the course is like and looking for any useful pointers.

I'm working my way through the pre-course workbook at the moment and although it is fairly easy to follow (so far) it is very dry.

I'm a kind of PM, but I've not been on a Prince2 course as I've never worked somewhere that uses it.

What I will say though is that when I've been looking for PM jobs, a hell of a lot of them seem to require a Prince2 cert so it could be rather handy for you.

I'm fairly sure Dave is a PM too, but I'm not sure what type of projects.

Out of interest, what type of projects do you intend on managing?

Cheers for that - I moved into an IT role at the end of last year and am currently a Technical Team Manager. Mainly I'm overseeing a IT delivery workstreams but am also reviewing our non-project change procedures.

The organisation I work for is an advocate of Prince 2 although they use a variant of it - similar methods but with different names  :x

Very recently I have been on an overview course of Agile project management. Bascially my aim is to build up knowledge of different methods and apply them as appropriate to whatever I am working on - company wide projects will more than likely follow Prince 2 and smaller ones that don't have many stakeholders or are managed within one team are more likely to follow Agile.

Just hope that I get through the course!

I've seen loads of IT Project Management jobs around (they keep popping up whenever you put Project Manager into something like Monster).

I have to make do with the 'threatening to hit Principal Contractors and Project Managers with a shovel' methodologies.  It really is the only way to manage projects

As TM says, I do PM too but we don't use Prince2.  Lean Sigma is used but I'm not trained in it, nor use it.

I basically lead my own way

Both of these approaches seem to have worked well for me in my short PM career!

Crikey, this thread is even more incomprehensible than those ones about rebiasing amps.

:D I rekcon all of that mumbo jumbo just gives greater opportunity for people to hide behind it rather than get on with delivering stuff!

I'm not 100% sure if it'll work, but try going here and translating it into English:

Very good Philly, very good.

After reading the course material I must admit that some of it is double dutch.

Dutch isn't a language, it's more like a collection of random sounds

the course is well worth going on. It's nowhere near essential to being a good project manager as experience far outweighs the training, but it will make you more employable in the future.
I recruit a lot of project managers, so if anyone knows one with a scientific formulation / analytical background, send them my way. Especially if they want to work overseas for a bit. :)

Are you a scientist with research and development experience?
If so, step in to my office and I'll put my serious face on

I can be whatever you like if the money is right

I was supposed to do research and development of fuel vaporisation in engine cylinders after uni, but the funding fell through.  I've also researched and tested the glues used to stick airplane wings on.
