Aftermath and EMG Combination
« on: July 15, 2011, 11:08:01 AM »
Hi,

I'm toying with the idea of mixing the Aftermath (bridge) with my already installed EMG 707 (neck) in my Schecter Hellraiser C-7 Sevenstring.  I'm wondering if it's possible to mix an active with a passive PU in general  :? and if the soundcombitaion could be usefull... The EMG in the neck position gives me exactly the smooth tone I need  for my lead stuff, which is why I would like to keep it, if possible. The same PU is actually installed in bridge position. It just doesn't give me the sound I'm searching for. Which leads to my next question  :)

the aftermath sounds really great to me and I hope to achieve a more dynamic, precised and clear sound due to my very low tuning.
Has anybody made some experience with such a set up and could give me some advise?

thanks  :D

Can't comment sound-wise, but the EMG uses a 25k volume pot and the Aftermath will need 500k.

I think the guitar has two volumes and a shared tone control?  So if you swap the bridge pot to 500k, you should be OK with the volume controls, but if you keep the 25k tone control it won't work very well with the Aftermath.

thank's for the fast reply

yes it is exactly like you've suspected. there are 2 volumes and one shared tone pot. Is there a possibility to set the tone to full for the EMG and just connect the pot to the aftermath? this would be ok with me, because I never make any adjustments with the tone pot. I think it's rather useless with the EMG at least for my sound.

Yes, as far as I know that is possible. The EMG will connect to the 25k volume pot and then to the jack, and the Aftermath to the 500k volume pot, then 500k tone pot, then jack.

Yes, you'll need to replace both the volume and tone for the bridge pickup with 500k pots, and modify the wiring slightly so the pickups no longer share the tone pot.

I assume the output wire from the switch currently goes to the tone, then that connects to the jack.  With the new wiring, the switch will connect straight to the jack.

Your wiring now is similar to an Explorer or Flying V (but with a different type of switch):

And you'll be changing it so it's wired more like a Les Paul (but without a tone for the neck pickup):
