Stoner doom metal pickup help
« on: July 21, 2011, 01:55:26 PM »
I'm into slow, trudging, bassy, and couchlocked guitar. I have a Dean Z-X and am definitely going with BKP when I have some extra skrilla.
If my intent is to play through an Electro-Harmonix Bass Muff Pi and Orange Dual Terror through a 1x12"+1x15", would my horrible tone tastes benefit from hot pickup like the HSPig 90 / Stockholm, or something more on the lighter side, like the Supermassive 90?

A second question: Does anyone have some recordings of BKP humbuckers operating in split-coil, series/parallel, or out of phase?
Praise the Sunn.

I would reccomend a standard alnico v warpig for your needs.
Your music will never be as hard as this!

Why would you suggest the standard humbucker over a P90?

Sorry. I did not see the "Why" in front.

I would reccomend it because i think you will like the full body of the humbucker in favour of the throaty, pick heavy sound of the Pig 90.

I rather like it. The pick kind of heaves through the bass. A humbucker-sized Pig 90 would have a slightly fuller sound, I would imagine, anyway.
Do you have any working experience between the two?

I have had all kinds of piggies. I do have a humbucker sized ceramic Pig 90. It has more attack than a 18v emg 81. its good for thrash, grind, death metal stuff. But not for doom, atleast i dont think so.

Yeah, I'm pretty well done with ceramics. I've had a few ceramic Seymour Duncans and don't intend on going back.
How is the noise with the Pig 90?

Not too into the idea of a noise gate. I usually run both pickups, so, as long as they're RW/RP'd, I should be fine.
How bad is it? Cheap fuzz pedal bad or an acceptable, white noise hiss?

I can live with it. But i play grind :)
I still have a noise gate on though, but just enough to kill the hum. No sterile djenty djent(even though its the best pickup for that job :S )

I played through a orange rocker & a thunder 30. My impression there was that i missed my bassist, since it did not have enough body with that setup.
Played both amps with a A5 warpig, and i did not miss my bassist there :)

That is exactly what I needed to know. Thank you, mate.
I found some revealing songs and audio samples from the players' section. Yours was one of the more informative.

I'll just chime in with Mads here, seeing as we have quite similar experience with the pigs, to say the least.

Make no mistake; The Pig 90 is an awesomely vicious little bar-steward and I love it to death, but I still think the A-pig would be best for the doomy stuff. The A-pig is my go-to pickup for that stuff, in any case.

Though to be fair it's my go-to pickup for pretty much everything

Would an HSPig 90 rhythm and A-Pig lead be a good combination, you think? I intend to wire a "raw-power" switch to bypass the pots and drive both straight to the jack. Chances are, I wouldn't use the knobs, often.
