Which is best model for Gilmour Tele Tone
« on: July 22, 2011, 03:29:54 AM »
Hi Folks

Looking for a bit of advice on best model for a Dave Gilmour tone similar to the tone he gets on Fat OLd Sun/Animals/Paul McCartney Run Devil Run sessions. A touch of Rolling Stones early to mid seventies tone with a smidgen of Mike Campbell (Tom Petty & Heartbreakers) would be great too. I guess I'm looking at a broadcaster-ish type PU? I have a standard MIM Tele and paly thru a variety of tube amps (fender, marshall, vox)

Judging from the sound clips on this site, I guess I'm looking at a Blackguard flat 50 or the Brown Sugar? Any thoughts or opinons most welcome.

Blackguard 52-set will come close. It's a classic broadcaster-sound. Very balanced and the neck-pu has a some nice strattiness too it. The flat 50 has way more output and mids. If that is what you want, this is the one for you. These two work well in brighter tele's, especially with maple neck/fretboard.

Thanks for the reply. It's very much his tele sound I'm after, not the typical strat tone with which he is mainly associated. Would also be keen on trying to get a bit of the tele tones that mike Campbell and jerry Donahue got. All of these are associated with a broadcaster era tone - they were all fortunate enough to get their hands on genuine 50s vintage Teles :-) Despite this, there is a considerable difference in their tone, so obviously fx and amps and style play a major part. I just want to try to get close to the main source or at least as close as is possible with a modern MIM tele with maple fretboard. Wold be wary that the 52 might be a tad bright, but equally, the high output of the 50s is way too hot but the mid hump is probably right for a broadcaster typical response? Thnk they also had the zinc plated baseplate. From what I've read since, the yardbird, despite the reference, might actualy be a good bet. Or even straying away from BKP, an SD jerry Donahue seems to sound promising. Problem with pickups is that it's not easy to try before you buy, given the obvious constraints!

interesting that you mention jerry donnahue, great player who actually said the budget jap version of his custom shop sig. tele was just as good!(5 position switch) he also used to play a cheap peavey tele too. add to that he plays tranny amps and prefers them to tube (i heard somewhere).
his tone is in his hands, more so than most.he put a lot of attention in getting even volume across the strings without relying on amp compression, pedals.(although he's using a compresser on the hellecaster stuff, king arthur's dream, you can hear it).

the 52 is not too bright and the key with tele's is using the toneknob.

Thanks guys! Read somewhere too that JD occasionally uses a nobels overdrive ( of all pedals tho their tremolo is fab) and reckons it's the best out there! Love his tone and palyng on Fotheringay and telecasting, not a huge fan of the hellecaster stuff. I listened to the 52 vs the yardbird vs 50s clips on this site and have to admit, do like the 52s best but anxious about making purchsd Zooey based on 15s clips ;-) there are a lot more samples of the SD broadcaster and jerry sonoahue on YouTube etc
