VHII set for a Charvel?
« on: July 29, 2011, 12:08:34 PM »
I have a Taxi Yellow Charvel San Dimas.
No issues with the JB/59 that are in there, but I have that combo on a couple of guitars and I'd like to diversify a bit.
I suppose the VHII is just what the doctor ordered for early 80s L.A. style? Think George Lynch, Warren Dimartini and obviously Eddy.
My playing doesn't even come close, but that's no reason why my sound shouldn't :D

Just had a VHII/Mother's Milk installed in ash strat. It's really punchy and overtones jump out when you dig in. It cleans up good too. It's only 9k, but it has balls.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

You didn't mention what amp you own, so I'm assuming it's a Marshall or Marshall-inspired amp.

Cold Sweat would be a better combo for what you are doing.

My amps are Marshalls, yeah.
Guitar>Maxon OD9>assorted effects>Marshall 2203X/DSL100.

I think they'd be great for what you after. I have a set of VHIIs in a Kramer and it definitely delivers the 80s hard rock and metal tones in spades.

I'm not doubting that as I have a VHII also, but Lynch and DeMartini in particular? I find the VHII is better suited for NWOBHM tones, while the Cold Sweat or Miracle Man is better for the LA metal sound.

I reckon I can get a pretty decent Lynch tone with the VHII, have never really tried copping a DeMartini sound. Agreed on the CS or MM being suitable, but I feel like the VHII splits the difference between the EVH and Lynch tone pretty darn well.
Another contender could be the Rebel Yell - definitely not worth discounting!

The Rebel Yell has been a contender for a spot in a Les Paul for a while now. Too many pickups, not enough guitars :D

That, my friend, is an understatement.

I love the RY for single-guitar style arena rock, but not really for metal. It has a lot of everything, frequency-wise, and for metal I'm looking for more focus.

The music I play is mostly old school. Hard rock in the vein of Y&T and Whitesnake, metal in the style of Grand Magus or Candlemass, and I have decided to finally have a go at copping some EVH tricks.
I firmly believe that you don't need a dedicated set up to cover all nuances, but I like the idea of having a couple of guitars that have a specific application...

Ultimately, you are your tone. The gear can help bridge the gap between the tone you hear in your head and what the outside world hears, but ultimately it doesn't matter much. You will always sound like 'you'.

Whitesnake = John Sykes = Cold Sweat

Whatever you decide I'm sure it'll sound great.

Enjoy!

Hmmm, to me, Whitesnake is Bernie Marsden and Micky Moody...

I believe Micky Moody used a Gold Top LP with a DiMarzio Super Distortion as his main guitar plus slightly modified Marshall amps for more bottom end.

But for Lynch, Ratt and early VH I think VII or Cold Sweat are good recommendations. My current favorite guitar has a Cold Sweat set, and in particular the bridge pickup delivers everything needed for blistering hard rock riffs and leads.

Cheers Stephan

What kind of guitar are we talking about here?
