New pickups for my Gibson SG
« on: July 30, 2011, 04:37:29 PM »
I'm not asking which pickups though, since i already ordered them.

Went with C-bomb bridge CS neck to place in my mahogny/maple SG. I play alot of rock/metal instrumentals in the style of Vai, Morse, Petrucci. Either that or AC/DC!

The neck pickup is my main for my own instrumentals since i do a lot of smooth distorted melodies and such (and coil tap for clean fingerpicking stuff ofc). Was recommended the CS set by Ben but i was afraid that it would lack mid so i got the C-bomb in the bridge. All the descriptions of the CS neck seems like its just what im looking for, although i dont shred the frets off.

Think its a good combo? I certainly hope so :) And i certainly hope the burnt chromes will look glorious in my blue burst flamed top.

That combo seems to be very VERY popular. I've actually got that in one of my guitars. Suprised you didn't get the alnico though if you're playing instrumentals. The Ceramic still sounds bloody great tho :)

Well i thought, Gibsons usually tend to be pretty middy themself and many instrumental guitarists uses ceramics and not too much mid. and the c-bomb got more top end which also gibsons seem to lack. Although my guitar is literally about 50/50 mahogny/maple.

How u like your set then?

Well if it helps. My Ceramic Nailbomb/ coldsweat combo used to be in my Les Paul before I put them in my Ibanez, and I can tell you a Les Paul is a lot chunkier and heavier sounding than an SG. In my Les Paul they sounded perfectly fine, so you don't need to worry about your guitar not having enough top end. I do know what you mean tho.
Also  you was worried that the Cold Sweat wouldn't have enough mid range - If you look, it's the same as the Ceramic Nailbomb.
I personally prefer the Ceramic Nailbomb because I play metal, but it's now in my Ibanez which is used exclusively for Progressive Metal (Dream Theater, Symphony X, etc.) It's a great pickup and plays leads very well, but I think the Alnico Nailbomb would be better suited to Instrumental Styles tbh - and it's also very tight for Alnico.
It actually depends, what kind of instrumentals do you actually play? Emotional, or complex Vai/Petrucci (Late Dream Theater, not early or his solo album) style?

Hehe tbh im really bass player who started playing guitar. I've only played guitar for 2 years so my chops aren't so good that i can play vai stuffs etc. For my own instrumentals i play either like emotional songs or just "rocking out" kinda instrumentals. Once i get better att playing i will probably play harder stuff for sure. Although im trying to play some harder stuff i think (not to brag) i play with some emotion all the time, so i want my tone to either sing or scream :P. Im very fond of blues aswell. I know alot of guys who can play way faster than me but many times they dont know what to play xD

Yh, you might've been better off with an Alnico pickup tbh for the style you want to play. But tbh, from what your actually saying, it probably won't matter until you've been playing a bit longer and really find your style. I've been playing 8 years and for 5-6 i was playing with EMGs, which the 81 is as Ceramic as you can get. And I played everything from Drop C Metal, to standard E Petrucci and Satriani stuff. You'll have the Nailbomb which is sooo much more expressive than an EMG so you'll be perfectly fine. Ceramics may even suit your style as it evolves. Look at Steve Vai, he uses Ceramic bridge AND neck lol

I forgot to say, yes the Alnico magnets may sound more organically expressive, but a look at this video by Vai will shut anyone up who says Ceramics aren't expressive in their own way either, lol ----> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6CfEaSmdtGU

Ye i rly chose the ceramic cause every modern day guitarist who inspire me use ceramics (both in neck and bridge), and almost always from dimarzio :P. Not to say though i think, for instance, steve vai's tone is anything special.

I personally think Ceramics are really good for tracking down very articulate solos and complicated licks. That's probably why all these players use them. Petrucci varies a lot though. On his solo album he used Alnicos and sometimes alnicos in the studio (especially Dream Theater pre-Millenium where they where all alnico). But tbh, with the Nailbomb, I'm glad I didn't get an Alnico (which I nearly did).  just love ceramic for some strange reason. I'm deffo going to try out the Alnico Nailbomb sometime tho :)

Exactly :) And the CS neck is still alnico, the bridge just needs to scream. I found lately that when i play with the bridge pickup over a clean ballad track in minor, i play zakk wylde type stuff (although far as hell from as good as him).

One of the songs i've made is heavily influenced by lotus feet and for the love of god.
Although when it comes to  more basic rock instrumentals i tend to play more like morse. Man, both those two (steve and steve) have helped me so much even though ive never met them xD

I really never liked petruccis tone than much though. Its too "spot on" alot of that is probably cause of his style of playing aswell.  One of my favourite instrumentals is Glasgow Kiss. Hes tone is much better live though imo. Just listen to the G3 version then the studio. The G3 just blows the studio version to the moon.
For neck pick up i just love morse tone. He just makes it sing.

I think you'll be fine with what you have then. Btw I don't know if it looks like this from your PC, but this thread seems to have buggered up a bit. It's saying I quoted myself on something I wrote a post before (which is weird because I didn't lol)
