The hideous gear you think looks good
« on: August 02, 2011, 10:38:27 AM »
I really like the beaten-down and well-loved gear.
Spray-paint finishes, runways of duct-tape goop, gaping holes where pickups should be, and torn grill cloths and tolex...

...and that purple finish on the Paul Allender PRS that most people call "faggoty."

I present to you the Red Fang "Jazzfang?".

I like it, and I doubt you will.

I also really dig the Doodoo Swamp finish of the AXL Badwater 1216.
Praise the Sunn.

Let me get this straight...

... what you're saying Roo, by posting this, is that folks with telecasters have hideous guitars that you think look good?!  :o

Here you go mate. Fresh from the shop :

As for the topic at hand : I love pointy, screaming, neon 80s guitars.

It's a tough one.... beauty is in the eye of the beholder isn't it?  The guitars I like best (Juniors, Teles etc) aren't pretty, but I think they look good.

I can think of a few guitars which are hideous but I'd still like to own them (but only if I could get them cheap)

Read it again, Andy. It's the person posting who thinks the guitar looks good, but the guitar is, by definition, hideous. Sancho got the idea, why the fusk would anyone spend good money on that! Yuk!

I love the M-III. One can argue the looks, but they are seriously good guitars. Unfortunately I didn't have the cash when they were around :(

I thought of you when I posted (although I didn't realise you had four!  )

Eye of the beholder, as I said.  I think the body shape, headstock and control layout are all pretty cool.  I only threw in the "hideous" because of the bizarre combination of cosmetic details - the maple board, the "is that supposed to be tortoiseshell or what?" scratchplate and - weirdest of all - the grey (grey?) "flint arrowhead" inlays....  :?

It really was the precursor to some of those strange Guitars of the Week.

Here's another one I really like, but it is genuinely ugly (especially the headstock, which I loathe).

Weird thing is, when you see them on eBay they're quite pricey - not sure anyone actually buys them, but I suppose they must do!

  I suppose, to get a cheap one, the thing to do is just to get a body built then slap on a Warmoth neck and some generic hardware.....

The workmanship is happening, but the body, hmmmm. Still a good guitar with superior woods.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

I have a terrible soft spot for European and Japanese guitars of the 60s, especially beat-boom era ones so any of these rock my world:

In fact the only thing I miss about Music Ground closing down is that I can't get a lunchtime fix of over-priced european 60s guitar eccentrica.
