Do the warpigs have more or less output than standard active EMGS?

I'm pretty sure it's more, but it's difficult to judge active EMGs
Hoble Guitars. Mule + MM so far.

i heard it was a shade less, but not much. I also heard that they sound "heavier" than emg's, due to the EQ'ing.

MDV, get your ass in here (he has both, and a MM into the bargain)!

Wooaaaaa, I'm here, I'm here  :P

Its got less than an 81, from A/Bing the two.

Its very little less, but its less. nonetheless.

Maybe 10%, at a guess (subjective of course.

MUCH heavier tone. By far. Far fuller sound, richer and more dynamic, more alive.

And if you dig into an 81....it sounds pretty much the same. If you dig into a pig, it really carries the energy of your playing and grinds and wails.

If you back off from an 81....it sounds pretty much like a thin rubbish 81. If you back off from a pig it still sounds full and satisfying. Very responsive for a metal pickup!!!

Its a world of difference really. Dont judge it just by output dude. The pigs plenty metal, and its by far the more musical pickup.

You can't really compare the output of a passive pickup against an active as they're different impedance but tonally the Warpig isn't far off the grunt of an active-it has a far more organic tone though. It's a pig after all :D !

Very fukking high gain indeed, would be my guess!!

I dont think you need it though. Thats just me, personally though. I play some very heavy stuff with a pig and a miracle man (I did with an 81, but the miracle man replaced it and I dont miss it in the least) and I dont feel I need more gain. Thats through a TSL, lead channel gain on 10 and a screamer, gain on 7 most of the time (but not at the same time  :( ).

But one thing at a time, y'know? If you think the warpig sounds like the pickup for you, try one. And then if you think it doesnt have enough gain for your taste then get the afterburner. I'm pretty certain that you wont find a more capable and tonefull pickup at that gain level.

Its certainly in the top end of gain available though. I mean, there are pickups with more gain, but the warpig has the best tone, inculding clean, of any pickup thats really designed to powderise your skull that I've ever heard. Which may not be saying much! I havent tried all thats out there. But it certainly slays an 81 tonally, and many others that come to mind at the same sort of gain level.

I think the only pickup that really has much more gain than a pig is the duncan live wire. Which has the output of 3 pickups and the tone of none.

well the after burner would be used pretty much exclusivly for my leads. I KNO i wont need any more gain if Im playin through a set of warpigs. The only reason I realy asked if EMG'S had more gain in the first place was because I just kinda wanted to kno what im gonna be gettin into when I buy the p'ups. I honestly dont like active pickups anyways.

Im pretty much doing a complete renovation on my guitar right now and I havent gotten to the electronics phase of said renovation yet. I might be able to get some for my B-day in June but its still gonna be a long ways off be 4 I can afford some.

If you order a set, you can use the neck pickup for leads. If you want it to be louder (as if there were a boost on it), you can adjust it closer to the strings than you'd normally do. I don't think the Afterburner's a good idea. It's a clean boost, which means you'll get more distortion and compression but your sound won't be louder with already a lot of overdrive. With clean or lower gain settings it's a different thing, but I don't think you'll use the Warpig for blues...
