Jani Lane RIP
« on: August 13, 2011, 12:01:39 AM »
OK, Warrant was never the greatest band in the world and Jani Lane had a self-destructive streak a mile wide, but it's sad to see anyone die so young.

And I have to say, the guy was responsible for one of the most perfect little slices of pop-metal ever written:

With the greatest of respect Dave, they were never even 1% as good as Winger!  :P

And oddly, a very rare case of a rock/metal band rumoured not to have actually played on their own albums (the first couple, at least)!

It's a real shame that he couldn't get clean & sober.  :(

I really enjoyed their first two albums

I know that much was done by the producer Mike Slamer who was the genius behind Steelhouse Lane, Streets and Seventh Key - he was credited with playing much of the guitars and my god is he a good player

Hey - Even CC Deville played the solo on Cherry Pie

But Warrant were a fun band (so were Winger - even though Reb ruined Whitesnakes recent tour with his guitar solo along with Doug Aldrich)

Yeah, Mike Slamer is awesome!  :D

Reb is just not the same player with Whitesnake, I don't know why.  He doesn't seem to really fit (that said, I'm not a big fan of current Whitesnake anyway)

This was my first exposure to Mike Slamer
It's a bit lightweight for some of the kids here , but my god what a great pop rock song

Can you believe that the producer on this was.....MUTT LANGE ...he was considered the bands 7th member in the same way that he was often considered integral to Def Leppard

Likewise!   :D

I think I've got the 7" single somewhere (or it may be their other hit, "What A Night", I'm not quite sure....).  Either way, great song!

But it wasn't until I got the two Streets albums that I found out Mike Slamer is British and had been in City Boy.

That said, I bought a City Boy "Best Of" CD last year and it's pretty awful - for most of it they sound very much like 10cc and/or ELO wannabes.  :|

yeah those solos are pretty hard...

dunno why they let cc take that solo, though. i mean, cc's hilarious, but compared to a lot of the 80s guys, he's not really in the same league.

So Damn Pretty (Should Be Against the Law) is the song I remember the solo from

I always prefered Chasey anyway but RIP Jani.

if we're talking 80s hair metal, then Slaughter deserve a mention with this slab of power-ballad royalty...

Dokken  PDT_015

Slaughter  PDT_029
- horrible band, Mark Slaughter had the most annoying voice.  Couldn't stand him in the Vinnie Vincent Invasion either.

oh yeah, Accept - they're like Priest and AC/DC rolled up in one (though not nearly as good as either, imo).  great riff at the start of that song though Jon.
