My live rig - Axe-FX/VHT/Zilla (Clip included)
« on: August 13, 2011, 09:33:24 AM »
Hi guys,

My band are having a weekend of rehearsal, and in a spare moment we mic'd up the rigs and recorded some stuff with it. I'll be putting up some video footage of it soon but in the meantime here is a clip of my rhythm tone:

http://soundcloud.com/nolly/zilla-cab-test

You're hearing my Axe-FX Ultra, 5150 model, through a VHT 2/50/2 power amp into my two custom Zilla 2x12 Fatboy cabinets (both with Vintage 30s). Both cabs are very deep and oversized, though one is a bit taller (it's nicknamed the Super Fatboy). The Super Fatboy is mic'd with an SM57, the regular Fatboy with an SM57 Beta. The two are blended together pretty much exactly 50/50.
If you're interested in a 2x12 with the beef of a 4x12 but more portable, I can't recommend the Zillas enough (Custom Cabinets and Guitar Amp Cabs | Zilla Music UK)

The guitar in this clip is my Dæmoness Cimmerian 6-string, with a BKP Blackhawk prototype in the bridge.

Note there's no post processing on the clip at all!

This is definitely the best tone I've had, sounds absolutely amazing in the room!

Sounds great Nolly!  For some reason I was expecting something drop tuned angry metal, but that's very hard-EVH.

Nice!

Holy crunch! This sounds awesome. Whats the Blackhawk voiced after?
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

Cheers dudes! I definitely do like an older school midrange voicing despite mainly playing very modern prog metal with this rig, but I think some of that vibe is coming from the riff itself - we recorded some much more aggressive stuff with a 7-string which will feature in the video, and with the exact same setup the sound is a lot more "metal".
Tele, I can't really say anything about the Blackhawk just yet, but I think it is going to appeal to a surprisingly broad range of players :)

How do you like the 2/50/2 over something like a Crown? I've been on the hunt for a good amp to use with the Recording Out on my Studio 2 ...

I can't say that power amps are something I am particularly knowledgeable in - I've tried a few Mesa's, Marshalls and the VHTs but not much else. I'd certainly be interested to check out a solid state unit like Crown make, though I am very happy with my 2/50/2 :)

I use 1 of those cabs too, also with V30s, with my Splawn and they really do fill out the sound like nothing else other than a 4x12 that I've ever heard.

Loved the song choice too  :D

Awesome, which do you have - the original Fatboy or the Super?

Wow awesome rig and soundclip. It's hard to imagine a better sounding rig for versatility. I deliberately refrain from looking into AxeFx......  :P

Tbh, I'm not sure  I think it's just the normal Fatboy.

I'm sure it's a wicked cab either way ;)
