Best bones for DIY picks?
« on: August 13, 2011, 05:49:14 PM »
I've recently gained access to a medium sized mammalian skeleton.I would like to try my hand at making some picks but I'm not sure what bones would be best for this.

Is it mainly the density that matters or is it texture that I should be concentrating on?

I was considering the femur but If I recall correctly there is some kind of honeycomb structure going on there.

Has anybody got any experience with this ?
It wasn't a mistake, it was chromaticism, I swear.

I think both density and texture will ultimatly be important, but I do not know which bones bring which qualitys.

As I starting point I would recommend cow though, as it is the usual material and I recon rather cheap to get a hold of. Try that and then others.

And let us know what you find with different bones, I am interrested to hear what you find.

I will be mainly working with cow (and possibly pig and deer). It's the choice of which bones from the animals to use that has me flummoxed.

It takes quite a while to prepare properly so my trial and error supply will be limited, But I shall certainly post any results.

It's not April 1st is it?
Whatever next?
Best breed of buffalo leather to make guitar straps?
Best country of origin of cotton to make guitar cloths?

Having said that, I would avoid the large bones as they do, indeed, have a 'honeycomb' type structure.
I would recommend scapula (wingbone).

You know, I would like to know how Petruccis bones would sound like...I mean that would really be a slice of life at your fingertips, possibly releasing the dark passenger you always wanted to set free.

What have you got against Dream Theatre ?

I dont know about Kiichi but my problems with DT are Petrucci and Labrie get rid of those and get portnoy back and it would be a good band

I love Dream Theater! Would be a shame if Petrucci goes to waste when he dies. Making music from beyond the grave....well maybe I am just sick.
