guitar wireless systems...
« on: August 13, 2011, 10:03:32 PM »
I'm looking to get a wireless unit after borrowing my friend's AKG WMS40 Pro Flexx.  I'd happily buy this same AKG unit, but was wondering what other people had found using wireless units.  Ideally I'd rather not spend any more than £150 and second hand is fine by me.

i don't know about price in the uk but line6's digital wireless products have really impressed me. they retail for around 430$CAD IIRC and their technology is based upon IP-wireless data transfer instead of the good old FM analog waves.
My BK's:
Black Dog8-Riff Raff8 / Black Dog7-Mule7
C-Bomb Set / Blackhawk Bridge
Holydiver Set/ BG50 Set

I've used a Sennheiser Freeport for several years now.  Superb and only £120 new  :)

I have the AKG WMS. It's a very good system, definitely worth the money. Don't cheap out on a wireless.
The cheaper ones can really mess up your sound.

I agree. The cheapest I would go for is the line 6 g30. Very popular amongst bands such as periphery.

I've got the line 6 G50, which i've been really pleased with. It doesn't seem to affect the signal noticeably and is very reliable.

Before that I had a cheaper Shure(i think) system, which was rubbish!

I'll not be much help in this thread as I don't know enough about wireless systems...but seriously, does using a cable really bother you enough to drop £150 on the novelty of getting rid of it?

I'd understand if you have money to burn, or are sponsored by one of the companies that makes wireless systems...but...really?

I wouldn't risk compromising the sound of my equipment just so I could be more flamboyant on stage. Happy using a cable :)

Sometimes I'd say a greater stage presence is worth more than an indiscernible hit on tone in a venue with so very many other variables (mic'd up cabs, for one...) which will all have far, far greater impact on tone.
If there's one thing I can't stand about a lot of live performances, it looks as though the guitarists are often superglued to the spot, and they seem afraid even to mosh out while playing for fear of some imaginary explosive jacket.  However good their playing is, this often makes them a rather boring spectacle...

I do all the sound (FOH and monitors) for my band as well as playing, so when we're sound checking I keep having to go out from with a cable dragging behind me, then over to the mixing desk - all over really and it does get tiresome.  Having a wireless will free me up on this level and also let me do cheezy things like doing the odd solo out in the bar, rather than on stage

I don't have money to burn either, this is a considered purchase for me - as all things are.  It will earn it's keep and make my life easier at gigs.

Thats exactly the reason I have one. We do our own sound and I don't want to rely on the pissed bloke at the end of the bar when sound checking! It also makes it easier to move around when we do play bigger venues.

btw, I've been having a play with the AKG unit I'm getting off my mate and setting the receiver volume in the sweet spot is key to getting it to sound right - they do sound a little harsh in the top end with the volume up full.  Around 2-3 'o clock is the sweet spot.

Yep, the balance between send and receive volume is crucial. It's quite easy to find the sweet spots though.
