Engl Amps
« on: August 15, 2011, 09:08:51 AM »
So I've tried tons of different Engl amps and my favorite one would be a tie between the Victor Smolski and the Savage. But I'm still not sure if these amps are really for me. On one hand both the Savage and Smolski (and pretty much all the other engls I played) had great clarity, were ridiculously tight (possibly the tightest amps I've ever played), had a nice grind, and my favorite part was how well they chugged. None of the other high gain amps I've tried (Diezel, Splawn, Diamond, Mesa, Fryette, Soldano, etc.) chugged the way the engls did. But, what I disliked about them was they sounded overly smooth, polished, and almost like I was hearing a recording of an amp rather than a real amp.  There just something about all the engls I played that sounded artificial. I know that engls are generally known to have that sort of sound, but I heard that the savage and invader were different, but to me definitely not. Both engls also sounded muffled and too compressed unless I turned both the treble and presence way up.  IMO they lacked the rawness and aggression I usually go for.  I compared both engls side by side with a Diamond Nitrox, which were all played through a diamond cab and to me the Nitrox sounded so much better and the guy at the store agreed with me even though the nitrox was cheaper than both engls.  Also, at a different place I compared the savage to a Laney, which in comparison to the savage was a little loose and muddy, but also sounded open, raw, aggressive, unrefined, and very authentic.  One of the guys in the store said that the savage almost sounded like a modeling amp in comparison.  I guess the only thing about the engls that really appeals to me is how they chug because there are plenty of amps I've played that are at least as clear and also very tight.  I guess I almost convinced myself already to skip engl  but what do you guys think?

In the late 80s I had an Engl Straight. Even back then they had developed their signature sound which indeed has the following characteristics to me:

+ very tight, no muddy bass
+ gain, gain and more gain
o many highs but they are not really open
- nasal high midrange
- too much compression
- you need to crank the gain to get a good tone, with the gain rolled back you lose even more highs

The amp seemed to work best with Floyd-equipped guitars. It did not seem to like any vintage-oriented guitars at all.

Before I read the last bit I was indeed going to ask whether you had tried a Laney GH-100. Another alternative would be the Carvin Legacy.

Cheers Stephan

it just depends on if you like them or not, i guess. they definitely do have that smooth, refined, compressed signature sound.

fwiw, if you hit most of those other amps with a boost pedal (e.g. tubescreamer-style), you can normally get that chug too.

I like engls. But i understand why people don't- i also have a laney gh50l, and it's a lot rawer etc., whereas the engl is more refined. I like both of them for different reasons. :)

I played an Engl Classic 50 2x10 EL34 for a while. A nice amp with a real sweet vintage clean tone. Great for bluesy stuff when it breaks up. The drivechannel is quite vintage-ish with a good crunch. I takes pedals well. A good grab and go amp. Don't have experience with other Engls.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

I used to have an Engl Blackmore. It had all the specs I required. Especially the twin footswitchable master volumes.
But I sold it after maybe six months... There was a harshness to the sound I couldn't dial out, and overall build quality was not very impressive.
Still, I find myself looking into Engl again these days...
