Marshall YJM100
« on: August 15, 2011, 09:46:00 AM »
Hey guys

Got the offer of a new Marshall YJM100 which I am quite tempted to get.

I am thinking that the Plexi sound will fit very well into my Deep Purple tribute band.

On the other hand lol, I have been using the Marshll AFD100 for that band as it produces fantastic tones and the gain goes fairly high which is useful for my other band which is a rock covers.

I am just interested in anyones opinions on whether it would be worth getting the YJM as well as it is similar in ways to the AFD.

I would like another modern high gain amp for the covers band as although the AFD is great I would like a bit more beef and scream.

Was toying with a Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier. Any other thoughts.

My idea is that a I want a good classic rock sound for the Deep Purple and a flexible modern gain sound for the covers.

I also have a Carvin Legacy100 but to be honest it seems too polite to me to be honest, shimmering cleans but very pronounced and too punchy.

Any advice would be graetfully received.

The YJM100, as I'm sure you know, is old-skool Plexi and would be good for the DP band.  But if you're happy with the AFD100 then I'm not sure it's worth buying.  Unless you just want to buy another amp for the fun of it of course!

If you're after flexibility, what about a Bogner XTC?  They have the "Plexi" mode you could use with the DP band, and super flexibility for your rock covers band?  The 20th Anniversary version is supposed to be superb, if pricey.

I have an XTC Classic and wouldn't swap it for anything - it's an incredible amp.

I concur the advice of Twinfan. The Bogner XTC has a lot on offer, from plexi to real highgain. One of best channelswitchers I heard. Pricey, but great.

If the Marshall YJM didn't have those features like reverb, built in boost, noise gate, and attenuator, would it basically sound like a stock plexi?

Thanks for the replies guys!

Yeah it would essentially be a stock plexi without the Yngwie stuff. The built in attenuator is incredible though, I used it in lots of gigs now with the Slash amp and had lots of positive comments on how great it sounds.

The ability to get a good Plexi tone at varying levels of control is a big sell for me. I also mess about with reverbs but I am always irritated at having to put it in the effects loop and bugger about with it ontop of the amp or with long cables.

I also love Yngwie! :)

I like the look of the Bogner XTC but yeah the 20th Anniverary is pricey..seems incredible. Might have to save up for a bit for it whereas the Yngwie amp is looking like an impulse buy.

Not really looked into the Marshall Major much will have a research but I have heard the YJM and christ does it sound good..not as driven and balls out like the AFD but good more traditional like a great Zeppelin/Free tone.

Any one else thinking about getting one?

i've been very very very seriously considering a YJM, it almost seems like my perfect amp!  but other life factors have made it unlikely i'll be able to get one :(

if you can afford it and like a plexi tone, go for it - I was impressed by the demos I've heard.

Plus, the extras like the boost give it some versatility.
