YJM100 or Dual Rectifier

Hey guys

Quick poll what do you think would be better for a rock amp

the Marshall YJM100 or Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier?

In other words which would you go for given the choice?

Comparing apples to oranges...
Multichannel high gain "modern" voicing vs single channel (with some gizmos, admittedly) medium gain "vintage" voiced amp.

What kind of music do you want to play?
What tones are you after?

For my last band, I would have picked the Marshall. For my new projects, I might be tempted by the Recto.

Play in 2 bands Deep Purple Tribute and a rock covers band.

Using a Marshall AFD100 exclusively for the Deep Purple and The Marshall, Carvin Legacy and POD HD500 for the covers band to get some versitility.

I feel the YJM would slip into the Deep Purple very well and the Classic rock covers. Admitedly the Dual Recto wouldn't really work for the Deep Purple.

Just tempted by the YJM lol but then again once you get in the mood to make a purchase you start lookign around at options. Twinfan on here mentioned the Bogner XTC which looks really good but pricey and perhaps a purchase later down the road.

In regard to the covers band I play Zeppelin, Ozzy, Gary Moore, Iron Maiden, Free, Aerosmith, Thin Lizzy, Whitesnake.

I must admit that I do like searing distortion as its a lot of fun to play with but sometimes can be a bit overwhelming in the mix, love vintage sounds as well lol.

Just extremely undecided, I think the Mesa will give me tons of flexibility, the only qusetion is does it have 'that;, sound the classic rock tone.

NO is the short answer.

You'd be well advised to go and try out the two amps in question and hear for yourself.

For the stuff you play, I don't think there is any mileage in buying a Recto when you have the AFD100.  To a lesser extent, I'd say the same about the YJM100 - you should be able to get all the tones you want from the AFD amp using your guitar volume and adjusting the gain.

Fair point.

Just very difficult to hear amps as I live on the Isle of Man and don't really have easy access to music shops.

I hear what you are saying in regard to the AFD. Backing off the guitar volume makes a massive difference in controllability of the amp which I love. Also with an OD pedal I can get a great thick fluid lead sound.

I think the main thing with the Yngwie amp is that I am an Yngwie nut firstly and I like the classic Plexi sound and the features the amp has. Whilst I can get a similar crunch on the AFD the voicing is still different as it is essentially a modded JCM 800.

My initial thought with the YJM was I love Malmsteen, I want a Plexi, I like the additions on it including reverb and attenuator and I like collecting gear so why the hell not lol.

Just then naturally I started looking at other options and have always fancied a Mesa for some extreme gain and metal which I love playing.

i haven't tried the yjm or the afd, but for pretty much all those bands you mentioned i'd rather have a marshall (or hot-rod marshall) type of tone than a recto type of tone.

Marshall for those applications. But I doubt it will add to the amps you already own.
Then again, I totally understand wanting to buy something new

From the description, I really don't think the Dual Recto would be any good at all. At least not with the bands you mention for the covers stuff.

Other than that, I've always found Rectos ridiculously difficult to dial in a decent, non-muddy tone on so with that in mind, it's a definite no on that one from me.

How about an Orange, though?

Not really considered Orange Amps to be honest.

The two that jump out are the Tiny terror and Dark Terror. Perhaps a bit small though.

My amp is usually running at about 45-50 watts flat out according to the attenuator.

Soldano - tonally about right - more marshally than a boogie but not quite as marshally as the YJM and tonnes of gain. Expensive and rare but from experience they are awesome. The hot Rod 50+ would be a good one to go for which is a bit more than the YJM. The slo is the daddy but more expensive again.

I don't know why everybody recommends Orange amps for people looking for classic rock tones...
Tried several, and they all sounded fuzzy to me. The Rockerverb (I think) sounded thick and juicy for leads, but buzzy as hell for riffs.
Not my cup of tea.

on a budget you could look at the Jey City stuff - very close to a SLO100 tonally; certainly ballpark SLO tones.

I'm sure there is one in seconds out here for £400, cheap as chips.

You could also look at Marshall-esque amps like Splawn.

Why don't you look at an Engl Ritchie Blackmore amp? That should do everything you want and a lot more besides.
