Aftermath Problem

Hey guys, I Just recieved my new Aftermath pickup for the bridge of my Ibanez RG7321. I put it in last night but found that when I selected the bridge position I got a lot of noise. I then switched to the single coil position and the noise dissapears. It would appear as if the humbucker isn't doing its job. Also I get enourmous emounts of noise when I face the guitar to any other electronic device, even it is 8ft away. I checked the wiring, and rewired again just to be sure that wasnt the issue, but to no navail. Does it matter what way I put the pickup in? Any suggestions or advice is greatly appreciated.

Hi, welcome.
I am no tech expert by any means, but some things of the top of my head:

If this is your first BKP: Are you aware that they use different colours on the wires than e.g. Dimarzio? This might affect your wiring.

The way it is turned should not make a difference for your problem (there can be general sound differences).

There is always the possibility of one of the coils being faulty.


My bet is on a wiring error though.

And a question: Is there a change in the noise of the HB when you touch different part of the hardware? (might point to failty grounding).

Hi,

That is definitely a wiring error. Do you have a multimeter? If yes, then do the following:

1. Take the two coloured wires that are soldered together and go to the split function (which is normally either on the pickup selector switch or a push-pull pot) and solder them apart.

2. Take the multimeter and read the DC resistance between one of the wires and the hot connection (at the switch or at the volume pot). Do you get a reading of 6-7k ohms? If yes, swap the wires, i.e. solder the wire which was connected to the other wire to the hot connection and vice versa. If you did not get a reading, measure the other wire and follow the same procedure.

The BKP home page has a support section with a lot of wiring diagrams.

Thanks for your replies guys! I have followed the wiring diagrams supplied here on the Bare Knuckle site, so maybe my soldering skills are just not up to scratch. I will rewire the pickup and let you know how it goes. Fingers crossed it isn't a faulty coil!

A good check is to wire the pickup directly to the jack socket and see if you get the same problem. Important to rule out anything else in the guitar that's possibly borked.

Good news! I fixed the problem! It was a wiring issue... due to my colour blindness! HAHA! She's all wired up correctly now and sounds amazing! Thanks for your help guys, it is much appreciated.
