Which guitar(s)? Advice appreciated...
« on: January 19, 2006, 09:08:18 PM »
Warning: very long post coming up!

Hey guys, I'm looking into buying a new guitar...well, two actually, but I'm reasonably well decided on the second one (but I'll put in a little about it at the end). It's the first one I'm having difficulties with.

Main Guitar: I want a shred machine, I've pretty much decided Ibanez is the way to go (on value, and they feel like "home" to me, in terms of neck dimensions etc., I already have an MIJ basswood RG 470).

The contenders: Ibanez rg3120F. About £800, Mahogany/maple top, prestige. http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/options.php?id=66926

Ibanez RG8570 J custom: £1149. Similar specs, but as far as I know, hand-carved neck. And, it has "real" dimarzios. http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/options.php?id=11248

Ibanez RG8270 J-custom: £1449: Similar spec to the 8570, but this year's model. And vine of life inlay. Maybe a slightly thinner neck. http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/options.php?id=68820

Basically, I can afford any of them, but obviously I could afford the £800 one easier than the £1450 one...

Also, quality of stock pickups is of no concern, I'd switch them for BK's, anyway.

The major problem I have is, I preferred last year's version of the £1450 one, it was £150 cheaper, and nicer, IMO, but they sold out (stupid indecisiveness!). Being a limited edition, that’s it (I’m not a fan of second hand, and it’s moot anyway, I haven’t seen any second hand). At the moment the 8570 is looking good, since I’ve tried it, and liked it, although the neck was a little thick (I still liked it better than any other guitar I’ve tried, bar the 8670). Also, the problem is, I have no way to try any of these (bar the 8570 I’ve tried already). There’s no way in hell anywhere in Northern Ireland  will be getting them in, and a one errand trip to the mainland would almost buy me the guitar. The 8270 (£1450) is supposed to play nearer to the 8670, but I wouldn’t be able to try it first, and looks cheaper built, in terms of cosmetics (other than the vine of life, it has no binding etc., and, as far as I can see, it’s only available in black here in the UK…).

Gah! Man, I hate GAS… and indecisive GAS at that …

For the second guitar, I’m thinking of a metal guitar, hardtail, mahogany/maple. The Ibanez rga 121 prestige, to be precise. £538. I had originally thought of an sz320/520/720, but I tried the 320, and it was ok, but nothing special. I also like the wizard neck that comes on the rga’s. Here’s a link: http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/options.php?id=66925

There’s a flame maple version, the RGA 321F, but, as far as I can see, it’s the same guitar, with a flamed top, instead of plain, abalone inlays, and slightly better pickups. So, basically, if i changed the pickups, they'd both sound the same. Oh, all right, you twisted my arm, here’s a link:  http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/options.php?id=66924

£350 more for a fancier top and abalone dots? I don’t think so (I’d be changing the pickups anyway). Any opinions of a maple neck for metal? Too bright? (it has a thick 16mm maple top as well…)

Basically, if you’ve tried any of these, have any thoughts, comments, ideas or suggestions of alternative models/brands at a similar price (bear in mind, they need to be 43mm/1 11/16” nut width and jumbo frets, I’m really fussy, unfortunately), I’d appreciate your comments.

I’m playing through an Engl Savage SE, if that helps.

(oh yeah, I’m not advertising GAK or anything, the official Ibanez site won’t let me link to products!)

I appreciate any advice or assistance. Thanks in advance.

ok... id say go 'custom build'

I was in your position a few months back, and i went custom.

Just under a grand got me my guitar from Bob Johnson @ www.legraguitars.co.uk.

Its a super strat style, with an ibanez wizard neck profile, swamp ash body, decent floyd rose, flamed maple neck + BKP loaded (eg shred machine!)

I've owned & played alot of guitars (from Gibbos to Jacksons), in fact i was either going custom or going to buy a PGM ibanez\JEM... i'm so glad i chose the custom option!

The fit and finish is superb, and its exactly what i want, down to the control layout and colour of the screws used to bolt the thing together :P

Id seriously have a chat with Bob about a spec and get a price before you go and mailorder an ibanez.. bare in mind he can do ANYTHING you want...any shape, wood, neck profile, colour, setup, any pickups etc etc... i loved the Wizard necks so thats what i asked him for ;)

Also, theres Feline and Laz Gajic.. both of them would be worth checking out, but Bob gets my vote as he made me my pride and joy 8) 8)

All those Ibanezs are VERY nice axes, i played a Prestige one (kind of a blue flame top with the vines).. but now i;ve gone custom i dont think i'll ever go back..

Good luck :)

How about trying an Ibanez AR300 reissue for your hardtail 2nd?

It's got that SG vibe, but with a carved maple top...

There's always the PRS SE's to consider as well, the singlecut Soapbar is a great guitar, and if you want humbuckers, the Tremonti SE is basically the same guitar. The double cuts are pretty cool too.

BKP's: Black Dog set, Emerald set, & Crawler set.

My guitar teacher had one of last years RG Prestige guitars (blue flamed maple) and he wasn't that impressed. He said it felt no different to a £600 guitar with better pickups, and would rather play this old JP jackson he had.

My point is play them both first then weigh up the pro's and cons.

chrisola: i had thought of custom built guitars, but I thought they were more than i had- i checked the feline webspage, and it said they started at £1400, which i assume would be a pretty basic spec (although well built, obviously).

I'll look into that other site you mentioned, thanks!

kilby: haven't been down recently, i tried the 8670 there 2 summers ago.

skybone: i haven't tried those prs's, but they have medium frets... I suppose it boils down to, if i'm going to have to order one off the net, i'd rather order one i've tried before (for the hardtail).

tewboss: yeah, i have to admit, i wasn't overly impressed with the prestige rg3120 or whatever it was i tried, but the j-customs were in another league, i thought.

I'll check out those custom makers (or if anyone else has any links for custom makers, that'd be great!), and post back to tell you what i think.

I think i'll probably be going for the rga121 for the hardtail, though, £540 or so seems good value for a prestige, japanese-built guitar (those prs's are korean made).

Thanks for the replies, I appreciate it. Keep 'em coming!

^thanks, chrisola, that's one cool super strat!- i'm looking mainly at legra, gajic and feline at the moment...

EDIT: could you gimme a quick run-down of th spec? looks like flame maple neck (nice!), abalone inlays? ash body? (or alder?) what type of floyd? Looks decidedly swish, though.

:D

flame maple neck (ibanez wizard type profile)
ebony veneer headstock
swamp ash body
nailbomb hb
mothers milk single
gotoh floyd rose
gotoh tuners

what you cant really see, but can really feel is the swish body\neck joint and the contours on the back which make it really nice to play!

^awesome, thanks chrisola!

how does the gotoh floyd compare to, say, an OFR, or a schaller? I assume gotoh ones are good, since they made the ibanez edge and lo-pro edges...

^that's what i figured, thanks...

I might go for a schaller, but i'd have to see.

Email sent, to both legra and gajic guitars (Feline seem to start about £1400, I figure with my spec it'd be way too dear!)!
