Amp Settings

Hey guys

I would be interested to know what your favourite amp settings are for certain types of music and amp/ guitar set ups.

Just read an interesting article about vintage Marshalls and that they sounded great with the following set up:

Presence  0
Bass         3
Mid           8
Treble       5

Apparently the creamy natural warm rich characteristics of Marshalls really come out on these settings?

What do we all think?

well, it depends very much on the guitar of course.

one thing i learnt from this forum is to set the treble quite low (0 to 1), and then use the prescence control to adjust the treble.

My treble's pretty much cranked, lol.. But then again it's not a real amp.

6505: bass 6. Mid 8. treble 7. Presence FULL. resonance FÜLL!!. Gain.. depends on how sloppy i am that day

i find with a lot of amps its better the other way presence controls usually add a tone of fizz in.

I find it better to add the highs in early in the preamp rather than in the power amp

Depends on what tone you're going for.  Many players don't seem to hear the differences between treble and presence.

If you keep the presence down low, you don't get that aggressive grind from the amp.  I use the treble to control the amount of 'cut' I want, then dial in the presence afterwards.

My EQ on a 2203-based circuit is:

Gain: 7/8
Bass: 6/7
Middle: 9/10
Treble: 5/6
Master: 2-6
Resonance:  3/4

I think my JTM45/100 clone would sound like a fluby ass with those settings.  I use:

Presence  6
Bass         0
Mid           10
Treble       10

on my 2204, i'd say my settings are roughly the same, except i'd have gain and master reversed, gain at about 3-4, master about 7

My settings for my Marshall 800 when playing hard rock :
Gain : 10
Presence : 3
Bass : 6
Mid : 5
Treble : 6
Volume : as required

With my Laney it's roughly the same settings but the Gain/Drive combination is usually 7/7, and that's plenty of gain for my kind of metal, especially with the mids cut to around 3.

Tele BG50's/Strat (HSS, Crawler/IT's) into Orange Rockerverb 50/2x12 cab:

gain: 8
bass: 4
mid: 10
treble: 2-5 (tele 2/hb en neck strat 4-5)
master: 6

fiddle with gain and volume until it sounds right
twiddle with treble and presence until it sounds good
turn the mids knob until you're satisfied
fondle the bass control as to when you are pleased

unless it is a recto in which case look away and just flap your hand at random on the control panel

move a bit slightly more infront of the speaker and realise it sounds pants, repeat

On my Cornell Romany with the tone stack switched out I have the volume at 6 o'clock. There aren't any other controls.

Orange Dual Terror:

Fat Channel is the only side I use.
Gain: 2:00. Highly responsive to the guitar's volume knob.
Tone: 11:00 (sometimes moves, but rarely)
Volume: Dimed all the time. I control levels with the 7/15/30W switch.
