Pickup choice for a HS 007 Elite?
« on: August 30, 2011, 06:37:36 PM »
Hey all, I've recently acquired a Schecter 007 Elite, Mahogony neck and body with a rosewood fretboard, set neck and string through body..

I bought it used and it came with a DiMarzio D-Sonic in the bridge and a Blaze Single in the neck.

I found the D-Sonic to be too muddy in the low end (drop A and Bb standard are me typical tunings) where the blaze sounded great in the mids but lacked top end and ended up sounding very thin at times.

What I'm looking for is something tight in the low end with a warm, clear top end in the bridge. I play a lot of complicated rhythm stuff, and play some lead as well, so ideally it would be suitable for both situations.

For the neck I need something articulate, but fluid for sweeping and legato playing. I would like a hot pickup that has no trouble with pinch harmonics and the like as my playing sometimes incorporates harmonics that can be tricky to hit.. (2nd fret on the high e for example)

From the reading I've done it looks like both the painkiller and aftermath would be a good fit for the bridge, is there anything else I should be looking at? I have no clue what would make sense in the Neck position..

Thanks for your suggestions ahead of time =)

Whatever you end up going with, I recommend turning the D-Sonic around in the interim period.  :)

Hmmm, turn the pickup around? So the bar would be towards the neck or the bridge? I'm not sure if it was installed the other way 'round when I got it >.<

Both pickups would cover the low end tightness but I have never seen them described as being warm.

I believe a Cold Sweat set would be appropriate for what you want to accomplish.

DiMarzio suggest having the bar magnet facing the bridge for a brighter, tighter sound.

I was thinking about a Cold Sweat in the bridge as well,( thanks for confirming that notion :)), but my guitar is a HS set, with a single in the neck position. What would be an appropriate single to pair with it?

@Philly, I will have to try it turned around then, the bar is toward the neck atm.

Ooops - must have missed that bit. I have not yet played any BKP strat pickups but to combine well with the CS bridge I would take one of the two loud ones.

Tim gve a hearty recommendation on the CS bridge, and said either the Trilogy or the Slow Hand would work well in combo with it. I'm thinking I'll go for the Trilogy Suite.

Now.... To get to saving!

This made a MASSIVE difference, thanks for suggesting it! More than enough to hold me over until I can afford new pups :D

I was thinking Trilogy, although I haven't tried it personally.  I think it'll give you a nice fluid Yngwie neck pickup sound which should contrast very well with the brightness of the Cold Sweat.
