Marshall Cab Speaker Options
« on: September 02, 2011, 09:38:49 AM »
Hey guys looking to get a new Marshall 4x12 Cab looking for a good 70's one failing that will go for a new one.

I would be interested to hear your opinions on the following speakers:

Celestion V30's
Greenbacks
G12T-75's

My current cab has Vintage 30's in it. Using the Marshall AFD and its good lots of head room bottom and clear and articulate which is good but...

I am getting the new Marshall YJM amp which is essentially a handwired Plexi and the cab would be to go with that head.  Overall I am leaning more towards a great classic rock tone which would ultimately mean I would want the speakers to distort earlier perhaps the V30's are too articulate for a plexi sound?

I have noticed that the cab they recommend has G12T-75's in it. I have no experience in these at all.

I have always been keen on greenbacks as they are meant to give a great classic rock tone but again I have never played through one.

There is also the possibility of putting 2 types of speakers in the cab in an X shape any thoughts?

Thanks for your input guys!

Can only comment on putting different speakers in: Yes, if they match efficiency (dB level) roughly speaking (ie within 3 dB, preferably closer than 2 if possible), and if tonally they each bring something different to the party, then the match of different speakers can be epic. Definitely worth looking at combinations in my view.
As for the rest, sorry, I'm after the no speaker break up tone so can't help you with those questions!

YJM uses the 75w Celestions, so that'll be why they suggest those speakers for use with the amp.

However, unless you are a YJM fanboy, I'd stay away from those speakers - sucked mids and lots of treble (unless you run them VERY loud).

I'd go with G12H-30s or maybe some Taydens as they're in that ballpark of tone, but offer higher power handling.

V30s are way to mid-heavy for plexi-type tones and fair better with higher gain amps to make the amps punch in the mids.

Celestion G12M-65s would be another option.

Mixing speakers can be really fun. Even if they don't match, there will still be some interesting accents to be heard from the variation. I really like the sound of early speaker distortion in under-powered 10"s to give the highs a sizzly crunch while simultaneously plowing over them with the smoother high-end of a loud 15", for example.

You already know your V30s. The Greenbacks distort pretty early, by comparison (which you may or may not like), while the G12Ts are fantastic at accenting the lows and staying tight.

Arranging in an X evens the playing field, but it's fun to see how the tones fill in the room by placing one set over the other or side by side. Arrange considering how the band sits and how you want the EQs and levels to smash into each other.
Praise the Sunn.

I love the G12T75 speakers. They give an accurate representation of the amp's tone rather than colouring them as V30s do.
I've bought several matching cabs with specific heads (Peavey, Laney...) and in all cases the amps sounded better through my Marshall cabs.
They'll have to pry them from my cold dead hands!

Really? - I'd say exactly the opposite and they kill pretty much any amp's tone unless you run them REALLY LOUD.

I'm dead serious. I run my 100 watt amps at rehearsal volumes, which means master on 3 or 4 or thereabouts.
That's not exactly bedroom volume, but it isn't LOUD either.
Lovely transparent speakers.

I haven't played many, some Taydens, G12T-75's, V30's, Classic Lead 80's.

with 4x12 cabs with 4xV30's, I don't really like them. Mesa, Orange... not for me. I've preferred Marshall 4x12's with T-75's to those. I didn't like CL80's.

I like my V30/T-75 mix in a 1960A. That said, I've also played a 2x12 Zilla cab with Tayden Great Brit and True Brit Hi which as the same, apart from the Great Brit has a higher power handling voice coil. They are both G12H style and sounded SWEET! So sweet in fact, that one day I will replace my Celestions with Taydens.
