Trying to nail the Cameron tone - Finished!
« on: September 03, 2011, 01:18:09 AM »
It is nearly impossible to get a Cameron modded amp here in Sweden so I have to try to nail the tone by myself.

I have a Tommy Folkesson Modded Laney PA 100 that sounds killer and now I want the Cameron sound to  :)

I have bought another Laney PA 100 to use as a platform to build a three channel amp. I have desoldered most of the stock components and built it up from the start.
The plan is to nail the Cameron HG José and Aldrich sound and maybe early Van Halen sound on the third channel.

I have started with the "Aldrich-channel", here are two clips I recorded:
Four gain stages with anode follower.

Finished channel 2 today:

Here is a clip of both channels:

Channel 2 with max gain:

It feels awesome to play it!   :D

Guitar: Greco EGF1000 with Bare Knuckle Nailbomb!

Tips and ideas are welcome!

Have you played a Cameron in person?

sounds really good, you're in the ballpark, but I think it needs to be more compressed for that kinda tone - Jose master volume with clipping diodes should do it.

I doubt it - he says in his first line that its nearly impossible to get such an amp in Sweden.  Fwiw, they're not exactly easy to find in the UK either.

I'd never even heard of them.

(To be honest, when I saw the thread title I thought "Just practice talking like an opinionated but somewhat ineffectual prat... you'll get there")

Anyway, on your amp, whether or not it sounds like a Cameron, it's sounding great :D

(EDIT: Not that I'm saying that David Cameron is an "opinionated but somewhat ineffectual prat", by the way, he just always sounds like one to me!)

I have played a couple of Cameron amps at the last 2 NY Amp Shows. For high gain 80s style metal I thought they were great. The gain structure is very close to a Splawn Quick Rod. I prefer the QR, but there are enough high quality clips out there of the Splawn to help you dial it in.

Oh, and btw, I really like the lower gain setting, but it's hard to tell with the super lo-res mp3s. You should get a SoundCloud account. It's free and allows you upload .wav and .aiff files.

First off, I hate to send you off to another forum, but I think slocloneforums.com would another place to get some great responses. I know those boys would love you over there if you shared your project.
Secondly, wow what great sounds!

if by great responses you mean 'use the search function'. That forum is frustratingly SLOW. its a shame because so many people on there know what they are on about and it contains a lot of good info. The cameron/jose stuff has been mentioned a lot on there, although I dunno exactly what circuits those names refer to past the diode clipping master volume setup. I actually find forums like this with HTH and JPF much more helpful, and even forums were people are building more vintage vibe amps. I use sloclone as a kind of jumbled up encyclopedia of ideas or a kind of thrift store knowledge pool...

what you might be into, is the friedman Marsha schematic with the hairy brown eye mod.

I must admit it is a pretty slow forum, but when you do get a response, it's more than likely on the money or close enough that you can take it from there. I wasn't in the slightest trying to undermine the big amp guys on here, just another way he could get some free info for his project.

edit:Nevermind, I see you had a thread there already!

I think its safe to say nobody thinks you were trying to undermine anyone. There is a lot of stuff to look through on the sloclone forums. would be more helpful the schematics were on there to reference against discussions but I understand why they aren't. I think the Marsha stuff on there would be helpful.

Yeah i have a thread on there but so far my problem hasn't been fixed. I'm going to try one or two more things and then call it a day I think.

You might want to talk to Brad King about getting a CCV-100.  I have one on order, but I am in the US, so I do not know if he will ship overseas?
