Baja Telecaster with humbucker in the neck
« on: September 08, 2011, 09:35:07 PM »
Still musing this, but it's getting ever more likely. Which makes the next interesting propersition, what will work well together?

The Badger is a ash bodied Tele with a maple neck.

I'm not good at describing sounds, but I'm after a thickish tele rock tone from the bridge and something approaching the sound of an classic LP neck.

I was thinking something along the lines of a Boss + Stormy Monday...

I would think a Stormy Monday would be great in one of them.  Boss bridge sounds intresting too.  I have a bit of love hate thing with the boss bridge. Love it in marshall sounding amps but struggle with it in fender sounding ones (Prob just me).

For me I would love to here a yardbird bridge with the stormy in the neck. Though boss bridge have a bit more balls and  does nail rock that little better.

Best of luck with it if you do go ahead with the project.

Can't comment on the Boss (never played it), but you may want to consider the (new) BGF50 bridge too - given the specs and clips and what I can get from my BGF52 bridge the BGF50 should deliver these "thickish tele rock tone" (possibly with the tone rolled down a bit).

Have: Crawlers, BGF 50/52s, Mules, ABomb, RiffRaff
Had : Slowhands (n&m), Trilogy (b)

Hi John, I think you would like the blackguard bridge.  If you go with the Flat 50, then I think you might like the neck sound anyway.  If you are going to fit a humbucker, then the Stormy Monday is the way to go (unless you can get Tim to make you a mini-mule!).

So many pickups, so little time

The Flat50-bridge and Stormy Monday would be a great set and very versatile too.  Personally I would look at the Missisippi Queen too. Does a nice job in the neckposition.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

Tim has spoken :)

He recommends either a Flat 50 / Piledriver mated to a Mule / Riff Raff.

Tempted to go 50 + Mule I have to admit.

I'd agree with you, Flat 50 and Mule.   :D

I'm sure the Riff Raff neck would sound too bright in a Tele (for my taste, that is - just don't like bright neck pickups)

Yep, I think F50 + Mule sounds like the business.

I'll be interested to hear that when you get it. I've never been really happy with the bucker in the neck of my nocaster.

Blame Philly (and Tim!) if it don't work

Seriously though, I've not tried them in the same guitar (I prefer tele neck pickups in teles), but I do have a Baja with the BGs in and, sat next to it, is a Tokai Love Rock with Mules in. The two guitars seem to fit both sides of a certain mood for me, happily going through the same amp without needing to tweak the settings... so I reckon it'll be a nice pairing.

Really liked the Mules in the Edwards that I've just sold and love the Tele bridge pup sound. Hoping to get a bit of all worlds with it. If it doesn't work, then there are other options. Though I think this does have a chance of working really nicely. Itching to get them and get it all back together again now.

I was just following the crowd, like a lemming....

No, seriously, just expressing a preference based on the different options Tim suggested.  Definitely the combo I would've chosen.

Can always have a 'converge at Cleggys' thing again. Will have a few new toys to play with shortly!
