A little wiring help required
« on: September 13, 2011, 10:41:20 AM »
Hi, about 2 years ago I bought myself a Gibson Firebird Studio, my first ever good guitar. It is the reverse body model with two humbuckers (490R & 498T) and is a dream for me as I am quite tall and the long neck makes it really comfortable to play.

Recently I bought a Blackstar HT-5 combo and this amp really bought out the character of the guitar. Unfortunatly although the wood and character of the guitar was brilliant the pickups are not balanced, individually nice tones can be had, but once the amp has been EQ'd for one, switching pickups makes the sound either muddy or harsh.

I've ordered a calibrated set of Riff-Raffs with the four conductor wiring and whilst waiting for them to arrive I've made this Jimmy page wiring harness (shown in the image below)

I don't know if this is allowed and please remove the link if so but here is a link to the forum page where this mod is discussed.

If anyone knows enough about guitar electronics to tell me which colours on the bare knucle pickups would correspond to each number on this wiring diagram? Help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers :drink:

What I would say about the JP wiring is that it's an almighty pain in the arse to remember where everything is. Plus some combinations make no sound or just sound shiteeeee. Personally I'd just use a single push/pull to coil split both pups, keeping it nice and simple.

Then again if you wanna experiment, I ain't gonna stop you  :) I think this is still up to date:

And I think this is the one I used when I did it:

But there are also these:

Probably the easiest one to use with the above chart is the Seymour one:

Thanks a lot for all of the help guys. I Finished the mod last night (2 am UK time) and then it didn't work lol. Back to the drawing board for me. I have jury rigged the pickups to the 3 way switch then to the jack, just to see what the tone was like. The neck tone is absolutely amazing, really clear, but the bridge isn't quite what I want. I think this has to do with the height and pole adjustment on the pickup. Is there a good guide around on how to make these adjustments?

Thanks again for the help.
