Ibanez RG1077XL - Need a new bridge pickup
« on: September 14, 2011, 06:12:07 PM »
Hey there, I recently got myself a RG1077XL and I'm looking for a bridge pickup. The neck pickup is alright and I don't use it too much, the middle single coil is nice too, but the bridge is rather muddy, has really no defenition at all. The guitar, as any other Ibby, is a basswod body/maple neck (bolt on) guitar. I mostly play Technical death metal, so I'd like the pickup to be very aggressive and powerful that can handle lots of gain with very definition, like Necrophagist and Psycroptic. What do you guys recommend me?

Cheers! :)

First off, screeeeeeeww you for having one of those guitars  :D I've wanted one for ages, but they're impossible to come by these days.

Second, I too think the C-pig or Painkiller is your best option. The C-pig has a bit more low end, to my ears, but both pickups should leave you with a big ol' grin!

Ahah :) It's an awesome guitar indeed, I just got it, I picked it up a week ago. It's a beast :D
But it can be "beaster" if I put a new bridge pup!

I'm undecided about the Painkiller and the ceramic Warpig? I'm looking to get a little close to that Necrophagist tone, I even have the amp they used to buy their albums  :D

I use the painkiller in a very similar guitar. i had a c pig in it before. and both loomer and i decided that the painkiller sounded waaaay better i. it than the cpig did.

Of course, there are some variables at play here:

- The RG1077XL is a 7-string, ie. more resonance from the neck, plus it has a half inch longer scale length. I don't expect that half inch to do much though.

- The amp, and the tone he's looking for. I still have a gut feeling that the c-pig might be a bit closer to that. What amp is it, first of all?

The amp is an ENGL Rackhead 860 (discontinued).

hmm. My best bet is the Painkiller. If you want less satuated response, then look at the painkiller. My fav pickup is the painkiller, and i have it in two of my guitars.

I play grindcore :O)

There would also be the Black Dog to give more definition on the long scale and a clearer signal, if your preamp has enough gain.
Current BKPs: Miracle Man, Nailbomb, Juggernaut, VHII
Past BKPS: Holy Diver, Trilogy Suite, Sinner, Black Dog

I mostly play Tech Death stuff, like Necrophagist, Psycroptic, on D tuning. Isn't the C-pig a probably better option because of the bass response? Also, I want to play in DGCFAD tuning (1 full pitch lower)

I think so. The painkiller sounds weak in "brighter" tunings.
You should still check out the aftermath :)

Oh man, another option? I'm just getting even more and more confused now xD
So, C-pig or Aftermath?
