Ebay non paying b'stard

Sold a guitar on ebay in the week, the ad was specified as UK bidders only. Had 22 watching and got a final sale figure I was happy with.

However the winner is from Hungary and had a feedback of 8, three days have now passed and no payment and he does not respond to mails. I could certainly have sold near the final figure he not put in his bid. GRRRRRR

give the guy a chance, if you still have no joy contacting him in a week, offer it to the 2nd highest bidder.

I agree it's too early to panic, but it does piss me off when

(a) overseas buyers bid when they've been asked to contact you first - then sometimes the have the cheek to moan about the shipping if they win.

(b) the buyer doesn't even acknowledge the fact they've won.  OK, there may be some reason for delayed payment, but they were interested enough to sit there bidding, the least they could do is get in touch.

We stick this at the bottom of every listing we put in. Covers just about everything and lets everyone know where they stand:

Due to time wasters if payment has not been received for an item within 7 days of the close of auction, and no reasonable explanation has been given, the item will be relisted, negative feedback given, and a non-paying bidder report filed with eBay.

Also in payment instructions:

Overseas bidders must contact me before bidding for a shipping cost. Overseas bidders must pay by Paypal.

It seems to keep most of the nutters away and covers your arse if they don't with regard to non-paying bidder reports and disputes.

I always ask overseas bidders must contact me for a shipping cost before bidding, too, but it doesn't stop them!

At least twice I've ended up with overseas buyers on "UK only" items.  They worked out OK, but it did make the logistics of payment and shipping a bit more complex.

To be honest though, when they do contact you getting the shipping quotes is a massive pain in the arse!  :lol:

But to be honest, I always pay quick on ebay, and I am getting a bit annoyed that UK sellers always limit their sales to UK. You guys gotta realise that the larger your demand group, the higher the price. It's simple logic. You can still exclude the most annoying countries from the list or just make it EU only if you wanna keep it simple.

The problem isn't people from Europe, but bidders from Africa/Asia. Pain in the ass. I also had people from supposedly England contacting me and asking to send things to Nigeria for their cousins birthday...

Seriously though, I don't mind shipping overseas, and I have done quite a few times.  But especially when I'm selling something which attracts a lot of watchers - like the Warmoth necks - I get about 10 emails a day from people in different countries asking for shipping quotes.  And you can't just copy and paste replies, because the quotes are always different.  So I spend about an hour a day doing quotes, but come the end of the auction they don't bid and 9 times out of 10 the buyer's in the UK.

Plus if you go outside the EU you get into the whole business of Customs declarations which is just too much hassle.

But hey, if you contacted me about a eBay item I'd be happy to sell to you.

i've been thinking the same with french, dutch and german sellers - cool items, but they keep it in their countries :) :)

I sent a WEM Dominator to San Fransisco via ebay.  I felt slightly proud I'd sent a little peice of British history to the Pacific coast but he could have sent a '65 deluxe reverb the other way :D

I said no postage in the ad but he contacted me to say all I had to do was drop it off unpacked at a logistics place a few miles from my house and they would pack it.  His communication was great, and it turned out okay, except for a tranny coming loose and cracking a Mullard but he got it working and I got payed.
Cost him £180 for the amp and £200 to post.

Had another sale, again I put no international postage but a guy from Italy contacted me (it was for a pedal I think).
I said okay and gave him a quote before the end of the auction and via Parcelforce it was pretty expensive.  He though I was taking the p!ss and thought I should try every logistics company in the UK until he accepted the price so I just told him the bugger off!

FWIW I'm using interparcel economy (UPS) at the minute for sending big stuff out. Sent 3 guitars with them recently and no complaints at all when it comes to price, speed or care when delivering fragile stuff.
