PUP Choice for RGA121
« on: September 18, 2011, 09:54:32 PM »
First of all I'm new to the forum, so hey guys, what's up?

Ting is, I just bought an RGA121 and I'll get it soon. I'm not positive that I'll be switching out the pickups, but from what I've been hearing, the stock set will leave me wanting more, especially the neck.

I mostly play Periphery, Dream Theater and Paul Gilbert. I think I've narrowed it down to ceramic nailbombs or aftermaths. I guess cover opinions couldn't hurt, so what do you think (RGA121 natural maple finish), black battleworn or distressed camo?

One more thing, the BKP guys help me with cavity size/spacing etc, correct?

Thanks dudes!

Hi...No doubt for Periphery stuff will suit Aftermath perfect...Petrucci now use Crunch Lab which is seems to me realy close to Aftermath as well...Gilbert use variety models of DiMarzio´s as Tone zone,Superdistortion, PAF pros so you could go from Mule to Painkiller and everything between......
BTW I´m selling my Aftermath chrome cover so if you will decide go that way just let me know... 8)

Thanks.
I have a JPX-7, so I think I have my JP esque tones covered. I mostly want something to cover my super heavy/tight tones and still pull off decent glassy cleans. And nah man, I think I'm just gonna go for battleworn or camo covers, thanks though.

Aftermaths would be perfect for the heavy tight tones and glassy cleans.
As far as the options, you want wide-spaced bridge, short leg, 4 conductor. If your guitar has the Ibanez 5-way superswitching, you'll need the magnet flipped in the neck pickup - let the BKP guys know if this is the case.

Be sure to do this, I ran into the issue twice where the lead from the pickup wasn't flipped in the correct orientation to work with the routing that Ibanez did for their stock pickups.  Also, the camo covers look awesome with the natural maple top.

Another option is the Painkiller, zimbloth over at SS recommended them and I've tried them in that guitar twice and loved them.

uncovered zebra looks really sharp in those natural finish rga121s

(to clarify- while i've seen the guitar in the flesh and played one, i haven't seen the zebra pickups on it in the flesh, just in online pics. Assuming the pics are an accurate representation, though... they look awesome. :D)
