(another) Help Needed Thread (Les Paul Custom)

Newbie to the forum here! Difficult to find BKP's in Hollywood, CA (Los Angeles in general)... but I just picked up my '57 LP Custom Black Beauty with a 1 piece SOLID (thick) mahogany body.

I play PV 5150ii, 6534+, Marshall JVM and Soldano SLO - in a very METAL context.

So while the burstbuckers allow the warmth of the mahogany to emerge (and are great for the classic rock), I need more cut and sizzle on the top end. (e.g. the '57 LPC makes my 5150/6534 sound too dark - WTF?!)

Thinking about the Cold Sweat in the Treble/bridge or the Ceramic Nail Bomb...but what about the neck and is a Alnico V NB a better choice?

Also thinking about changing the load on the vol and tone pots for more "fine tuning"...and understand that the tapers will be altered (whisper to scream from 350k to 1M or even 500k).

Cold Sweats perform very well in Les Pauls. A safe bet. I reckon 500k.

cold sweats definitely have enough top end sparkle for mahogany.

i personally think that is the best application for them. In anything else ive found them far too bright and lacking in lows

Although I've personally only tried them in an an SG, I think the (bridge) CS might be a little bright in a maple-topped LP but they should be great in an all-mahogany one.

I have Cold Sweats in my Mahogany flying v and my all mahogany LP clone (below)



Rest assured they have enough spark in both these guitars
I use either 500k or 550k pots

the riff raff would do a great job was well, but without the extra ceramic aggression and higher DC compression
it does retain the "woody" tone and also has a ton of top end sparkle with a more open sounding midrange
had both in the same les paul custom
I'm enjoying the extra versatility and openess of the riff raff better
but if you're playing mostly metal, the cold sweat is probably a better choice, although the raff is just as amazing for a lot of hard rock and metal stuff
