Which pups for an Ibanez 7620?
« on: September 29, 2011, 05:44:48 AM »
Hi,

I've been asking at a couple different places about which pups to get.  I've been getting different answers each time.  I figure asking multiple sources will come up with some sort of consensus (hopefully...).  I want a pickup for progressive metal (djent, as everyone calls it).  I love both Nolly (RSF) and Misha's (Periphery) tones, but they can get good tones with anything it seems like.  I want a bridge pickup with good note definition, chord definition, thick, aggressive mids, and tight bass.  For the neck pickup, I want something with warm, fluid tones.  I'm not sure if that's very descriptive for the neck, but I don't know as much about lead pups unfortunately.  I'm sure most of you know, but the 7620 is basswood with a bolt-on maple neck.  From what I've read and been told, the Rebel Yell, Nailbomb, Aftermath, Emerald, or Coldsweat would work well for the bridge.  The VHII is the only neck recommendation so far.  I have a really heavy pick attack like Misha and get a lot of gain from the pick attack, so my gain is set pretty low for the sake of clarity.  My amp is a Peavey VK112 combo with a TS-7 as a mid boost.  I also plan on playing in drop Ab.  I hope this is enough info.

I appreciate all of your help!

I'd say Cold Sweat. I have a hard picking attack too, and I've found the CS to respond quite nicely to that. It does that percussive thing very well, or at least it has the times I've tried it.

I haven't "lived" with one myself, as the 'Pig suits my needs (make horrendous noise to cover up lack of talent) better, but the Cold Sweat has sounded very nice every time I've heard it and played it.

The Aftermath has quite some mids. The neck: Cold Sweat.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

Ok.  How much does the eq voicing on the BKP website affect / reflect the wood types of the guitar they're put in?  Basswood with maple is somewhat of a bright combination so it seems like the CS would be really bright... ?  It might not be that way, but that's just what my logical brain is telling me, haha.  You all know more than me though. These will be my first BKPs and I just want to make sure I'm getting ones that I like.

Edit: Just in case people aren't familiar with Ibanez guitars, this is a 7 string.  I don't know if that will change answers at all.  Thanks!

AM or PK bridge/MM neck could work

the aftermath and painkiller are naturally scratchy sounding with a strong and aggressive midrange, so if you feel you don't need that character, since you already have a tight picking, you could try almost anything else on BKP line
they're all tight enough, imo
on very low tunings, even the more scooped models, like the miracle man, show a very growly midrange
I like how the diver and nailbomb sound on low tunings, but it's more of a modern bouncy tone than scratchy djent

Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

^ Cool, thanks for the input.  I'm not sure if I understand what you mean by bouncy with the NB though.  Is there a band(s) with that sound you could give me as a reference?  Also, I assume you mean the alnico NB right?
