Glam/Hard Rock pickups for Les Paul?
« on: September 30, 2011, 01:14:01 PM »
I'm getting a Les Paul soon and I'm looking for a bridge pickup suited to early 70's British hard rock. Any recommendations?

By 70s glam I assume you maybe mean Sweet, Slade, T Rex, Bowie, Suzi Quattro, Mud, Queen, Rubettes, Gary Glitter

High gain pickups weren't really around in the early 70s so you want to look at the vintage end of the range .
A lot of LPs used at that time had what are referred to as Patent number pickups because they had the patent number stamped on the bottom of the pickup

Closest in the BKP range is the Riff Raff

You could also use a Mule

Or if you want a touch more oomph then look at the Emerald as that kind of still fits the bill

(Black Dog and VH2 will work but are less obvious choices, and you could get away with a Crawler if you neededthe guitar to be more hard rock ...

Then I would say Riff Raff or Emerald

I'm a bit of a Bolan fan myself - hence my logo artwork

Based on the descriptions Riff Raff would be more the Glam and Emerald more the Hard Rock side.

Yep, I'd say Riff Raffs too.

When it's not playing blues, my SG does a lot of Marc Bolan, Mick Ronson, Zal Cleminson, and Slade type noizes :D

Didn't realise you were a Bolan fan as well Jonathan - I just didn't spot the reference on the logo, kinda obvious when you point it out

I'm going to side with the Emeralds here - they are very specifically aimed at reproducing those 70s sounds.

I have a Riff Raff in the bridge of my V and it's great for those Bolan-esque moments
