Now I'm only going on memory here.... and its been a while since I would consider myself full bottle on this topic. But if I remeber rightly

MIJ strats are made of Basswood.

CIJ are made of Alder. Alder is a member of the pine family so as far as I'm aware they have be made of variations of such wood.

However no offense would be taken to correction... as I say its been a while.

I think Jp is bang on about the construction. I have a 1960's reissue from Japan and it is definately basswood- lovely plank- Sonic Blue. Olympic White is my second favourite after Sonic Blue

The more recent MIJ Fenders are made of Alder or Ash predominantly. If the guy said its alder it probably is

To clear up the issue of body woods on Fender Japan Strats, there are various models that have the good quality tonewoods.

Fender Japan made Export Models and Top of the Line Models that they make specifically for the Japanese Market.

The premium models are way better than Made in Mexico and Korea / China models.

In the neck pocket the stamp will indicate the model and it's list price in yen.

ST62 - 75TX = 62 reissue Strat model , list price 75,000Yen with Fender USA Custom Shop Texas Special Pickups

The easy way to tell is take the neck off and look at the neck pocket stamp. If it's got and EX stamp then the guitar is the export model.

The premium models especially the Malsteem and Blackmore Signature models are very very good quality guitars - on a par with USA.

I have a ST62 - 75TX 3 colour sunburst Strat with Pau Faro fingerboard, black scratchplate, white pickups covers, gold hardware and vintage steel block tremelo.

The is neck is made from flamed maple and surpasses USA Custom Shop!

I imported it as a broken guitar from Japan as two pickups were dead. Tim at BNK rewound them to his Irish Tour Spec.

The guitar now drips SRV in looks and tone.

No wonder Fender HQ want to keep these guitars in Japan only, as they cost less than the MIM's !!!

GET ONE and Change the pickups to BNPickup's = Tonal Heaven

Surely you'll see the wood when you fit they pups - they don't normally fill in the whole guitar, I thought? Hurry!

And "BNK" pickups? Get a grip, man!

Why doesn't Fender want to sell us great guitars for a fair price?

We have to import those great Japanese ones practically illegal.

If it's because of inferior USA guitars, this is not the sollution. It means the USA ones have to get better.

I'm with you all the way - but as long as they can keep people under the impression that US guitars are better, they will continue to make sales, especially if we only have the choice between a fair US guitar and a poor mexican one.

well i took my neck off yesterday and it is a hard wood most likely alder. becasue basswood is soft.

Man the apaches sound so good in it. and the vintage tuners stay in tune damn well.

my friend jsut recently got a 62 reissue and it looks so nice!  its a softer wood so probably basswood.
