I wasn't really familiar with his music, but he was one of those "names" I 'd heard mentioned in reverential tones for many, many years.

I'm very saddened by this news. Have been a huge fan for years and was fortunate to see him a few times. A phenomenal presence and talent. Just missed tickets to the Pentangle gig this August and that, it turns out, was his last performance.

If you're looking to listen to one album I think Rosemary Lane is his best solo record. In fact that's what I'll be listening to for the rest of today I think.

terribly sad news for me – Bert was my absolute favourite guitarist of all time. He had been ill for a while, so it doesn't come as a great surprise. Nevertheless, another one of the great legends of acoustic guitar, ripped off by everybody, especially Jimmy Page, has gone. RIP

A fantastically talented guitarist-one who took it to another level which makes him, in my view, one of the greats.

A sad day. I heard about this earlier today too. A great talent.

A huge inspiration to me and, obviously, many others...

Very sad indeed to hear of his death

From what I've read about him he had a strange mix of genius and humility, stunning people with his performances and then catching the bus home...

Yeah, I had no idea he was ill. I think Black Waterside is the best folk track ever. The first name band I ever saw was Pentangle.
