any one have a guitar with a tripple humbucker set up?
« on: October 08, 2011, 12:26:37 AM »
What did you use?, what would you recommend?

I have this mockingbird, which was really in sad state when i got it and i recently brought it back to life and decided to route for a 3rd humbucker. I wanted something a bit different than my average setup and wanted to go for something with p-90s, but with all the switches that came with a mockingbird I had to use something where I could make them all functional. I opted to try these Seymour Duncan Hot P-rails. In theory they're killer and had i not been using bareknuckles for some time i may not hear all the nuances that are bugging me now. (they're simply just not as clear and articulate and i don't get the note separation/3d sound that my BK equipped guitars get) The pickups themselves are made up of 2 types of coils. one "hot rails" coil which is primarily a single coil pickup and the other coil is a true P-90 coil which i believe they use in their "fat cat" model. Basically you wire it to an on/off/on switch and you can get either a single coil, a series hummer, or a p-90. Really cool thought, but i just found that despite them sounding great clean, it's just not doing anything for me when they're dirty. Aaaaannyways, I've basically decided i'm going to go with a 3 hummer setup in place of these in order to keep all the switches functional. I'm looking for a thick stoner sludge type tone, in the heavy dept, think Goatsnake, Sleep, Electric Wizard, so i think a Warpig is a must for the bridge, but I really want this thing to be versatile so i'm really open for suggestions for the other two spots. Any suggestions?

also it may help to know all of the pickups will be wired to a mini 3 way switch for series/split/parrellel wiring
and the guitar is made of Mahogany wings an a maple neck

If you should be asking for crazy I might be able throw in an idea. Disclaimer: I have not played these pickups, I am just going by information gathered here (, so this is just a mindplay of me).

I am thinking getting the HHH to be a HSH layout with the middle being a P90 to add that different flavour and increase versatility.
Nailbomb bridge, HS Pig 90 middle, Holydiver neck.
This is a bit of a strange combination, but my thinking is: NB bridge is very versatile and can do metal to rock, I think great for stoner. Then you rightly mentioned the Warpig (would be a great bridge choice too), but I was thinking to put it in the middle to get a lot of versatility out of it and great combinations with the other PUs. If you could get a HS Pig 90 it would be cool too, cause it gets a great aditional vibe which should fit stoner nicely imho (donīt know if I would put a normal WP there). The holydiver neck should round the whole thing up as it is supposed to be a great neck in general and should fit with the others in a way while still giving nice contrast.
This would be my idea of a versatile stoner guitar.

Again, I am a madman, which has been proven time and time again, so take this with a grain of salt...actually you should probably take the whole shaker. This is just what I would be very interrested in doing and most of the other folks here would rightfully disagree with me.
BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n
On the sidelines: Stockholm b / Suppermassive n, Mule n, AM set, IT mid

i was thinking about the H, p90,H thing and it does sound appealing apart from the fact it leaves one of my mini switches with no function. still leaning toward the Warpig bridge because i simply love it in the rest of my guitars.too many decisions

If you got the P-90 (MQ or whatever) with two conductors plus shield, you could use the mini switch as a phase switch.  Just a thought.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

They make them. Just write to Tim first and state your wishes. Then he asks you to order a Mississippi queen wherein you write it as a humbucker sized pig 90 in the commentary box :)

There is a member, here (wish I could remember his handle) what has a white Epiphone SG with a C-Pig bridge, A-HSPig-90 in the middle, and an A-Pig in the neck position. He plays some really interesting doom/stoner stuff through a Matamp and Emperor 6x12".
Truly astounding tone.
Anyone know who I'm talking about?

wow that seems really cool, Tim suggested the following and I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with it. What are your thoughts?

"3 HSP90s............ with a Pig90 in the bridge you could go with a Stockholm mid and Supermassive90 neck."

they all sound really interesting in the literature. I am really new to the P-90 word so still not sure what I like exactly. All i know is I recently played a 60's tribute SG at GC through a JSX combo and really liked what I heard

That's the guy. I would do psychologically damaging things for his equipment.

right? I've really come to like SG's lately. I've always thought they were cool but never could justify buying a Gibson, all that $ for a set neck guitar over a neck through, that is likley to have a headstock fracture a week after i get it and that I'm going to have to strip of it's hardware a electronics to get it where i like it? it's just crazy. Slowly I'm developing a larger want for one though
