Best Speaker for a 4x12

So while im waiting for the funds for my new amp to show themselves, im having a think about upgrading the speakers in my cab. The cab in question is a shockingly cheap, but so far well built and reliable Laney, pic here:

I think i saw onthe laney site they were supposed to be fitted with Rocket50's if i remember rightly. Now iv had no complaints so far but with the money im about to splurge on the amp (Orange) I am thinking i need to make the most of the tone.

oh and i dont really have space to buy another cab :) so thought swapping out the speakers could be best!

all about your personal taste, but i personally use Fane Medusa 100's and Eminence swamp thangs paired together. LOVE THEM

If you want in general more cut in the band mix and more aggressive mids, the Eminence Governor (or, more expensive but almost identical sounding Celestion V30) will help with that. I think two speaker would be enough, just make sure they match the impedance of the other two speakers.

If you use super low tunings, two Eminence Black Powders are very tight. If you want more volume and very good and versatile sound, the Eminence Wizard (or, again similar, Celestion H30) will help with that.

Swamp Thangs have also been recommended very often on this forum.
If you want to spend some more money, the Eminence Delta Pro 12 is a cheap but good Electro Voice EVML12 clone. I think that will also help with very low tunings and low end, but be more balanced than the Black Powders.

For fat sounding blues and clean jazz runs, I love the Eminence Cannabis Rex. it is very fat and rounded and has very low break up.

you'll likely find a Marshall 4x12 loaded with V30s for less than you'd be able to buy four new speakers for the Laney - makes sense to sell the Laney and get another cab already loaded with some good speakers.

have you tried the black powders in a closed back cab?

the guy at eminence told me it wasnt a good idea as the cone wasnt tough enough to handle the pressure and would likely tear.

also if i remember right you can get a harley benton 2x12 from thomann with v30s

for about £110 its worth it to do that and list the empty cab on ebay

I had some black powders for a bit. Too bright for my taste. The man-o-wars are great though. They have a great british voice with bid more focus on low mids. Also the red white and blues are great. Almost have a jensen fender twin vibe goin on

Yes, a closed 2x12". One Black Powder and one Governor. Nothing broke (maybe I was lucky).

I actually agree with you I ended up pulling them out of my sunn 412 when I sold my mesa triple rec and bought my VHT pittbull. I now use 4 Fane Medusas and 2 swamp thangs in my Emperor 6x12 and 2 of each in my Sunn 412L. the fanes are basically an over powered vintage 30 so you get no speaker break up and the swampthan is sorta like my sub. The move serious air. Punchy as hell!

Thanks. so it looks like eminence are the brand of choice. I play mainly standard tuning so no need for low frequency bowel loosening speakers.  :)

Yeah definitely look into Eminence theyre great bang for buck speakers.

lean business generally does deals on sets of 2 & 4 so you could get a bargain
