Coldsweat (bridge) + alnico 5 magnet = Rebel Yell?
« on: October 12, 2011, 05:42:10 PM »
Ok, I just did a bit of thinking:
Somewhere on this forum I read that Tim had said that the ceramic Nailbomb was essentially an overwound Coldsweat. From the description on the product page and from comments on this forum the Rebel Yell seems to be close to an underwound alnico Nailbomb, to me at least.
Combining these two things logically results in the Rebel Yell being a Coldsweat with an alnico 5 magnet (or at least very close to).

Can anyone verify or falsify this?

Lately I've been growing a bit displeased with the "ceramic-like top end" of my Coldsweat 7 and the Rebel Yell has always had a certain appeal to me so a magnet swap might already to the job. (guitar's a RG1077XL)

probably
offset coils, about the same DC, 43 awg plain enamel wire

but I guess only Tim can confirm this

Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

Not quite, no. But I will say I made exactly that transition (Cold Sweat -> Rebel Yell) and found the Rebel Yell had many of the qualities I enjoyed about the Cold Sweat, but with a smoother treble and punchier upper-midrange. It's worth mentioning you will notice a drop in output, and increase in dynamic response when moving from a ceramic magnet to an Alnico V too.

@Nolly
So you mean that the CS and RY are physically more different than only the magnet type but that the RY has got some of the qualities a CS also has?
In other words an alnico Coldsweat would not sound like a Rebel Yell or at least close to?

Yes, the Rebel Yell's wind is slightly different to the Cold Sweat's. An AV Cold Sweat will probably sound fairly close though.
