Hi. Im new, but seeing as I should prolly be working on homework, ill jump straight to the point.

I have an Epiphone Les Paul running through a Marshall MG30DFX (but in a few weeks, with the money I might move up to a Laney LC30, a valve amp to those who dont know).

I play alot of music, Zeppelin (and other 70's hard rock), Cream (and all sorts of "power blues", Sabbath, Megadeth, BB King Style bigband blues, I play in a school jazz band, and have a hard/progressive/"reggae influenced" rock/metal band of my own. Thing is. I really dont like my pickups.

Warpigs tempt me, because every time I think Warpigs the first thing that jumps to mind is Sabbath, Grandfathers of Metal. However, from what I have heard/seen the Mules are looking amazing. Any help as to what I should get? (note my influences as well as what I play).

Are the mules nice and clear in a neck position? (as I rather enjoy them for solos, my style for solos is pretty Black Sabbathy, a bit bassy, extremly blues influenced). Also with the neck, how about clean tones?

Zeppelin Tones? (On that note, I'd get my bridge one uncovered, extra output and treble, treble I find makes the lead metal sound more convingly).

I don't think the warpig is that suited to the sound you are after. The Crawler sounds like it would cope much better as it is more versatile - nice cleans but also will distort well enough for heavier music.

the mules are supposed to be very good. i haven't got any myself, but from what i can gather they are an allrounder (not in a bad way though).

Tim or Steve will be the best people to ask as they make the pickups. Hopefully you will get more replies later in the day.

For what I hear, Ill jump through hoops to get them (even if it means ordering direct, or through the dealers in America. Im Canadian btw)

I just put a set of Black Dogs into one of my LP's and they sound great.  I think you will get all the cassic sounds with them, if you really want the Zeppelin sound.  Mules have a bit less output, but are still great rock and blues pickups.  I also like the Emerald in the bridge for a bit more of that early Thin Lizzy sound, I have an Emerald/Mule combination in my Goldtop.

There are 2 other sets that I would consider for a bit more output, these are the Abraxas and the VHII's.  The abraxas is the earlier Santana sound, think Samba Pa Ti, Black Magic Woman, etc.  The VHII's are Eddie's Brown Sound, but they are very versatile.  

For your jazz stuff, just turn the BK's down.  They clean up better than any other pickup I have ever used.

Mules are great - original hot humbucker sound - but if you are between Warpigs and Mules and like Zepplin why not look at Black Dogs?

The Black Dogs are perhaps somewhat hotter than the Mules, but I think more midrangey.  Got to admit when I read the original description, I thought "Mules!".  Mules are very PAF; hot for PAF, maybe, but definitely very good PAF.  They'll happily dish out spot-on classic rock vibes, but Tim uses them with his Ozzy tribute band, too, so they they've got all you want when you dig in to them.

I had the same thing with the Warpig -- it took all my strength not to get one; I knew it wouldn't be right, but it still seemed so awesomely cool!  Anyway, I wanted to handle Iommified thunder but be able to dial back to Santanaish smoothness, so for my LP I ended up going for the Crawlers (similar to the Abraxases, which are themselves sort of "Mule+"). Crawlers are markedly hotter than a proper PAF-style pups, but definitely keep a dose of organic, vintage vibe.  Mine are (theoretically) being installed now, and I should have the guitar back on Saturday :)

What about something along the lines of... A mule in the neck, and a Black Dog in the Bridge.

That way I can settle my musical needs AND my Jimmy Page fetish at once...

I'd go for Mules, Black Dogs or VHII's. I have a set of Mules and they are very versatile, and I play everything from Zeppelin to Pantera. My soloing style also sounds similar to yours, bassy and bluesy  :D
