Alice meets the Evil Monkey
« on: October 15, 2011, 05:25:17 PM »
Well it's not often some of juansolo's and Marauder's pedals that have flown the coop get to meet, so I thought two of them getting it on deserved a mention. More of John and Cleggy's awesomeness here - http://juansolo.demon.co.uk/stompage/index.html

Today we introduced Alice to her sibling Evil Monkey. (Pics stolen from our beloved Juan's site)

Alice - sort of makes a lot of noise in various sorts of ways I think is the best way to describe her, she's a bit of a psycho bitch...

Evil Monkey - Hendrixish octave fuzz meets a monkey covered in poo

Anyway here is proof of their coupling going into my board as it stands at the moment.

And this is what happens to people as a result

No audio I'm afraid as you we wont inflict that on the poor world. It's also one of those 'you had to be there' experiences as Juan and Marauder will also attest to.

If I'd have only remembered we could have got a Bender involved as well, but hey ho...

Oh yes I have. I spared Matt that as he looked giggly enough as it was with just the two pedals. Even I haven't had the balls to check it out with the MuRF and the Ring Modulator as yet. I'm waiting until some expression pedals arrive before I do that. I expect it to be completely unusable and hours of fun! ;)

Is that a Nick Greer Ghetto boost on your board?

Yep, his stuff is quality. I believe you rave about one of his boosts? I've been meaning to get some more of his stuff, but keep forgetting.

The standout pedal on that board is the purple Skreddy ?Lady. It's simply the best fuzz I've ever played.

Yes, the Sweetback Driver. I keep it turned on at all times and set at 9 o'clock. It does the thickening thing that the z.vex SHO and Klon Centaur do, but without the boosting/overdrive. Amazing stuff!

Hmm, as the owner of several fuzz pedals,  I shall have to check that out!

The ?Lady is bloody fantastic. Due to the now completely unobtainable transistors in it I can't make myself one.

It's another pedal on my list that I'll buy if one pops up for sensible money (sadly getting increasingly unlikely).

3.5 really. It's an Uglyface + LFO and mods into a 3 knob tremolo (can't remember which one I used!) into a Rebote delay. The trem was chosen as it was nice and simple 3 knobber (I knew this thing was going to end up with lots of knobs) that could get nicely choppy. As a choppy trem after an uglyface is fun. Get it in or out of sync with the LFO of the UF and it is even wierder. The rebote again was chosen for it's simplicity and the fact we could tweak it can run just on the edge of forever.

Essentially it's a box of lo-fi nasty madness. It can make you sound like a laser gun or like your playing in a bucket. It can also distort and twist the signal so much that it's pretty much irrelevant what goes in one end vs the output at the other. With the LFO, to be fair you don't even need to plug a guitar into it for it to get pretty wild.

Part of me wanted Huw not to like it as I'd have gladly kept that one.

Oh dear, it would seem that the visit to Chez Shob has raised the need for a compressor and a new fuzz in young Matt. I think John's going to be busy with weird graphics for a while yet!

I liked the way the neighbours banged on the wall in approval. They must have been very impressed because they did it for ages!

Made the compressor (well the board). Unfortunately 3 of the caps are unknown and unless we find the values we're best guessing (given that we've never heard one). Might have to get you to pop the back off it and take a photo. If yours is an early one we've got a chance. However if it's a later surface mount one... We might be struggling.

After John and Marauder did some digging around and some borrowing of pedals, they've managed to clone the ?Lady using slightly different transistors. Mine arrived the other day and I think young Matt is getting one as well.

John wouldn't put a picture of a Ladyboy on mine so I had to take what I was given...

Anyway here is the result! We'll mine anyway...

It's a rather spiffing thick, fat-arsed sounding fuzz which is as close as dammit to the original Skreddy ?Lady it's based on.

It works with both humbuckers and single coils, which is nice!

Here's what the original sounds like, courtesy of Mr Snakeskin boots himself:

I've been a bit of a naughty boy and I've gone and bought another original ?Lady, which means I own approx. 3% of the ones ever made! :)
