Newbie BKP90, 91, 92 PUPs ...
« on: January 24, 2006, 08:28:48 PM »
Hi guyz,

I read a lot of posts of this forum, but still wondering ...

I recently got a pretty cool Gibson LP DC faded worn yellow as a christmas gift, many thanks to my girl friend !
This guitar is very pleasant to play. I think about upgrade the PUPs.

That's my point.

I have a 52RI telecaster, a SG Std and a LP Custom, so I'd like to get PUPs so that my LP DC would be positionned in a "fat scale" like this :
Tele 52 - LP DC - SG Std - LP Custom

My amp is a DIY SE class A tube amp (www.projetG5.com - 12AX7+EL34 or 5881) and I like "brown fenderish heavy clean to light crunch" sound ;-)

What would be my choice between BKP90, 91 or 92 if I want this Keith Richard's "Midnight rambler" sound (he uses a LP Jr on this song on Madison Square garden concert 2003) ?

Many thanks !

Welcome to the forum.  I think that the P-91 might be the way to go, the P-90 might not have quite enough punch.  I have them in a PRS and they sound great.  I also have a rewound P-90 in a DC Special, and this is what I am basing my recommendation on.

I would guess for "Midnight Rambler" tone you'd want a regular P-90, but for your "fatness scale" you'd want a P-91.

If you want fat, how about a Warpig P-90??

Thanks, it is many long years of working a desk job to get them :P

The Pig-90 has more bass than the regular P-90 and I don't hink this is what you are looking for.  A P-91 with the volume backed off a bit will get you the sound.  I was at the concert in 2003, and just saw them again last September on the new tour.  Part of Keith's tone is from his amps, the 'tweed' tone.  I think it is the 6L6 vs EL34 sound too.  My French is not good enough to check the technical spec, so I was wondering if you could use a 6L6 in your amp?

Philking,

I prefer the 5881 (a kind of 6L6) in my amp, instead of EL34, but I try very often new couples of tube ;-)

Thanxx to all for the advices !

Set up my BKP 90 this saturday : wow !!!

As bright as my tele 52 but not as "glassy", as powerful as my LP Custom, I definitely love these PUs !

My LP DC Faded got magic !

I'll try to upload samples if I can !

BKP91 is a regular P90 I think - the BKP90 is underwound and the BKP92 is a hotter one....I think :?:

I thought that the BKP-90 was the early P-90 with AIV magnets but still 10K turns.  The BKP-91 has an A5 magnet with 10K turns, which was the standard Gibson from the late 50's,  and the BKP-92 is the Hot version of the 91?
