NAD, almost
« on: October 22, 2011, 11:13:36 PM »
oops.  i went today to look at a JCM 900 SLX.  i was curious about how they actually sounded having heard lots of people rave about them.  as it happens, the shop in question had just unpacked a brand new Marshall AFD100, literally out of the box as i came in!  apparently, one of only three to come to Ireland.  so of course i tried it out :)  and then put a deposit on it and it went back into it's box!  no one else even got to try it, sorry 1/3rd of Ireland ;)

as it happens, i tried the SLX as well, and i was amazed at how similar it sounded to AFD mode.  if it wasn't for what it was, and the extra features in the new amp, i might well have gone for it instead.  but since it is an AFD, and i thought the price for the 900 was a bit steep at £750, i am now the proud (nearly) owner of an AFD-100  :P

Good choice mate - they're superb value for money if you're a rocker!

thanks Dave, it really does just make you want to keep on playing it.  not the most subtle tone in the world, it is a straight up hard rock sound, but it is like the best hard rock sound i've played with!

i actually brought your old SG with me to try it, it's become pretty much my no.1 guitar ;)

they're nice sounding amps for sure, will hold it's value well too.

£750 for the JCM900 SLX is a good £250 over the going rate.

that's what i thought, they usually go for between £400 and £500.  he actually had €1250 on it!  just dropped the price this week.  they have a JCM800 for €1250 as well.  the AFD will do everything both of those can, and more, so i'm happy.

the stock 6550's sound great, but i wonder has anyone tried EL34's in one?  or Dave's old favourite, KT66's

I tried EL34s in mine, didn't make a huge amount of difference so I left the 6550s in...

had a little play last night :)

i put it through an Orange 4x12 with V30's.  started with my Gibson Explorer with stock 500t/496r pickups.  in AFD mode this translates to a huge riffing sound and a smooth, saturated lead tone.  endless sustain, morphing into easy and (usually) toneful feedback.  you suddenly have the sound you've heard your heroes use, with no need for any pedals.  #34 mode is more like a JCM800, which of course it's modelled after, but with more gain.  definitely easier to get your classic rock sounds in this mode.  AFD mode is completely addictive, but in the long run i can see #34 getting plenty of use.

i then switched over to my 1970 Les Paul custom.  remarkable difference!  it was suddenly a higher gain vintage Marshall!  the lower output pickups made for a fair drop in gain.  i generally use this guitar with my 70's JMP 2204, which is an amp i totally love.  the AFD doesn't have the same dynamics, and doesn't clean up the way the older amp does.  in fact, it doesn't clean up very well at all!  they both sound like Marshalls, but from different eras.

so my only complaint is the lack of a clean tone, volume reduction just doesn't work that well.  the power scaling is brilliant, full on roaring amp at whatever volume you need.  the only problem with that is i now NEED a YJM100! :)
i figure i could use an A/B pedal and put another pre-amp into the effects return, if i really need cleans.

the next thing is to try it through my Vintage Modern cab, with greenback re-issues.

You can't complain about the lack of clean tone fella - it does what it says on the tin!
