For the klone lovers... Interesting experimentage afoot.
« on: October 28, 2011, 08:50:36 AM »
We've done some experimentation with another 'klone' board. Populating it how we did the original klones. Interestingly this board is true-bypass (I hate that expression and the importance put on it when it's just a cr@ppy MIC footswitch) so the buffer is only on when engaged. Also it doesn't have the charge pump. In theory this should lessen the headroom of the buffer...

Well we back-to-backed it yesterday and if it doesn't sound identical. We've got a little bit of fettling to do as it's squealing like a git when the gain is maxed (might be purely that it's mounted to a piece of cardboard with wires going everywhere).

Eiiiiiiiinteresting!

Interesting!  What's the difference in tone then?

if you make some PCBs (or have them made up), I'd have some off you.

Very, very similar. Reckon you'd struggle to tell which was which blind listening.

It's MKC1 board from GuitarPCB.com. I'll ask Cleggy to send you the list of substituted parts for it.

I think this whole shelf would piss them off to be fair (certainly quite a bit of it). All work in progress...

What's that thingy with the tube on it? Is it running at proper voltages or starved?

Starved.  The ones we've built so far ran from 12v, we've just make a new power board for that one (it's not assembled yet). 9v in, regulated 6v for the heaters, 18v for the buffer and 40v for the plates. We'll be running a 12AU7A in there. A 12BH7 would draw double the current and seeing as we're already doubling that by running the heaters at 6v rather than 12v we'd be looking at a 600mA draw for the heaters alone. Which is getting a little excessive from the perspective that we're trying to make this one so it'll run off a Jonny Shredfreak PSU with plenty of grunt to spare.

Mainly it's an experiment as the biggest problem we have with the valve pedals is the brick of a PSU needed to run some of them. That and I'm trying to get to the stage where I can run all my regular pedals from a pair of JS PSUs instead of the 4 different ones I have chucked behind the amp at the moment.

As for what it is, it's this (that's the schem for running from 12v, heaters would be wired differently for 6v):

We run the buffer from a klone after it.

Our take on a valve caster (pisses all over one from a great height IMO). Though it's really only for low wattage single channel amps (like my Goldstar). It's just like having a stompable crunch channel. Possibly my favourite pedal.
