wiring schematic help
« on: October 30, 2011, 10:54:14 AM »
I'm looking for a wiring schematic for my strat. It's h-sc-sc and I want to throw in a mini switch to split the coils of the humbucker. Anyone who can help as I haven't been able to find a diagram myself.

Look on the duncan site - you'll find a diagram , but you'll have to swap colour around

If I recall correctly - if you have a RWRP middle trhen you will ned to invert the BKP colour scheme anyway - so black and red go to coil tap white goes to earth and green is hot (swap green and white if out of phase)

I finally got to wiring up my guitar, but it isn't working quite the way I was hoping.

The mini switch I got is an on-off-on and I am trying to achieve humbucker series in middle position and respectively north coil alone and south coil alne in the outer positions as described here: http://www.smitspickups.com/coiltapping.htm (scroll down a bit).

I have connected everything as to the diagram Jonathan posted earlier (http://www.seymourduncan.com/pdfs/support/schematics/1h_2s_1v_2t_5w_pp.pdf) except for the mini switch. I have (hopefully) done what the mini switch "diagram" says to do, but I'm not sure where to connected the hot to the pickup selector switch. I have connected it to the same terminal as the humbucker hot, but this is surely wrong as the mini switch have no function.

Can anyone tell me what to do to get the mini switch to work? I can only "read" a diagram and do as it shows, but if somethings wrong I have no idea what to do as I don't understand the principles behind the diagram.

I couldn't tell from that link which schematic you're following!

What kind of humbicker? Remember that not all manufacturers stick to the same colour codes for pickup wires. This can make life very confusing.

Lookee here ... http://www.seymourduncan.com/support/wiring-diagrams/schematics.php?schematic=color_codes

That makes it very difficult!

Maybe I'm reading the article wrong but I don't see any mention of a switch that does North - HB - South there, just straight coil splitting.

I know that not understanding the electric circuity makes things hard and a real problem when things go wrong. I might be wrong about the north-south thing, but my intension is to go for the possibillity of splitting the humbucker so each coil can be used alone (aren't the humbucker coils termed north and south?).

Do you still have the red wire from the pickup going to the five-way switch and the black wire going to ground?

If you want to be able to select either coil of the humbucker, the mini-switch acts as a selector switch between the two coils.  So all four wires from the humbucker should connect to the mini-switch - red to one end terminal, green and white to the middle terminal, black to the other end terminal (the bare ground/shield wire from the pickup goes to ground as usual).

Then you have two wires from the mini-switch - one end to hot (the five-way switch) and one to ground.

Look at the first diagram here:

http://www.guitarnuts.com/wiring/sw3.php

I think that should fix it!

On which terminals at the mini switch should these be connected?

The two outer ones, same ones the red and black wires from the pickup connect to.  It doesn't matter which then goes to hot and which to ground.

If your switch is an on-off-on DPDT (with six terminals) you'll only be using one "half" of the switch.

I'm not 100% sure this is going to work - but at least 95%.

Now the mini switch is fixed and works as intended, but the tone pot for the bridge isn't working and the volume only turns down the volume slightly and muffles the sound - kinda sounds like a tone pot. Oh bugger me. how to fix this...  :?

Sounds like you're missing a ground wire somewhere maybe?

Well that's something...!

Hmmm, that's hard to "diagnose" without actually seeing it.  Does the second tone pot work OK (not that that helps solve the problem)?
