Upgrading pickup and pots on Mexican Tele
« on: October 30, 2011, 04:46:49 PM »
Hi people. I'll be buying a standard Mexican Telecaster in the next couple of weeks and I plan on fitting a BKP Piledriver in the bridge. Would it be worth upgrading the pots for this? I know there's a similar topic but that was more to do with humbuckers so please don't kill me for adding a similar topic :-)

Hi

Pots have the same effect on SCs and HBs - you end up with a lowpass filter with the cutoff frequency depending on the pot's value and quite a few other factors. The main difference here is that Fenderish SCs producing much more hi frequencies, it's usually ok (and even a good idea) to use lower pot values (typically 250K).

I don't know what MiM pups are worth so I can't tell if you *should* change them, but given the price tag for a BKP and the price tag for CTS pots, an audio quality cap and decent wire, you might as well change everything ;)

FWIW,the PD is a rather hot SC and *may* benefit from a higher value pot (300 or even 500k) - but you'd better search the forum and/or wait for other opinions here. Also note that if you use a higher value pot, this will impact your neck pickup too.
