Future Amp Purchase
« on: January 25, 2006, 10:41:27 PM »
I am considering buying a new 100 watt valve amp sometime in the next year and am not sure what I should choose. Ive played through several JCM200's at local music stores and have liked them quite alot but am not willing to spend 1500 dollars on an amp. I play ALOT of Black Sabbath style metal and might consider looking into the Laney GH100Ti. Ive also been considering a used JCM900 from ebay. Theyve been sellin for real cheap lately(around 500-600 dollars). Any Opinions?

a 2nd hand Laney Iommi sig amp would be cool, or a boosted JCM800?

The Engl thunder does oldschool metal REALLY well, and can be cranked to give modern tones aswell.

^i second the laney or the engl (BTW the thunder is 50 watt)- i haven't tried the thunder, but it might be a bit more "old-school" than most of the other engls...

Yeah, it's most certainly not twice as loud.

if you MUST have 100W, look into a powerball, if you can afford it, or those laneys if you can't.

I also like 100w heads over 50w too - there is just more lowend grunt that 50w don't have.  You also get more headroom in your clean channel too.

^ :D

i just got a 100w head with a half power switch...

best of both worlds- and its not just pulling 2 valves either- it's triode pentode, so it sounds "creamier" on half power as well...

Man, I love my savage se- i took a chance buying it without having played it first (awesome offer, and i'd played other engls), and, man, did it pay off!

Exactly. I could probably settle for a 50 watter but I already have several solid state amps that are solely for p[rtactice and right now I need an all valve amp that I can use in ANY gigging location. That and its just kinda cool bein able to say  "I have a 100 watt all valve Marshall head" :D. Anyways, Has anyone played a Voodoo modded JCM 800 head? Ive been lookin at some of those on Ebay and I got to listen to a couple sound clips.
