50w heads could be used in ANY gig situation. 100w is only a third (1/3) louder so it may be psycological more than anything.
Personnaly I'll go for a Engl Screamer head, very versatil and powerfull (on a good cab, vintage 30 got 100dB sensitivity, enough to boost up the 50w :) )
Sure you wont have the "I have big balls and you havn't!" factor
JCM900 is just plain cr@p IMHO, as most of the newer Marshall...
If you can find a modded JCM800, just go for it!!!

It all depends on what jcm900 you get really. Anything after the 2100 model is considered cr@p. Mines a 2100 and its ok. Very good for that 80's metal tone, for the modern day stuff an SD-1 would help with more chug and gain. But ENGL Screamers are the nuts in my opinion.

I agree with that, some of the 1st series were OK but those'll get their ass kicked by a Screamer

depends what you mean by "bang for buck"

They have a MUCH larger range of sounds than a marshall (bar the classic tube, and maybe thunder, because I haven't tried it)- but if you want THE marshall tone, and only that, marshall is the way to go.
